While adding members to the group on my father's side of the family, everything seemed to work for living people; when I went to my mother's side, there was a problem. When I tried to open the children of her brother, Kenneth Taylor, only the dead child showed up. That left three living cousins unavailable to add to the group. One of those is very active in family history.

When you are COPYING from your Private List you see a tree format. All the people who are deceased are greyed out. You don't copy any deceased profiles into a Family Group Tree. All deceased profiles are the same as in the FamilySearch Family Tree (the main public one!) As you create profiles for living people in your Family Group Tree, you connect them to those deceased individuals.
@Lois.P Having all the people in your COPY tree greyed out would mean that you do not have any profiles of living individuals in your Private List, or at least none directly related to you. If you work farther out in your tree, say your aunts' and uncles' grandchildren, are there living descendants of your 2nd cousins that you could copy into your Family Group Tree? That would indicate that the system is working properly. Would you be able to send a screenshot of what you are seeing?
@Thorne Peter F Would you check in your Private List to see that you actually have those children attached to those parents? I often find myself surprised by information that I thought I had added but then couldn't find.
