Does this record show he was 38 years old at death?
I found James Monro, line 18 below, my ancestor in the Edinburgh Scotland Cemetery Register, 1771-1935 on Ancestry. It shows he passed 02 June 1822.
What I'm curious about is the abbreviation after the numeral 38 y. What is it? Can I definitively say he was 38 years old when he passed to search for his birth year 1783-1785?
Appreciate any help here.

As for the question about the abbreviation, it took me a while to realise - there is no abbreviation - it's simply that the word "years" is habitually broken up as "y-e-ars". Or to draw a picture of it...
I have attempted to box out the letters above - the "y" is self-evident. The "e" is little more than a vertical line, in contrast to the "a" which is spread out and has a disconnected top. The last box contains an "r" - the "s" is missing in this example but is little more than a vertical squiggle elsewhere on this page. The "a" and "r" are connected by ink, in contrast to the "e" which is disconnected from the previous and next letters...

Wow - now I see it. One of those cases where another pair of eyes can make the difference.
Now my search for James born in 1783-1785 with a passing date of 1822....
Thank you very much for your assistance.
