    Third great grandfather adopted?

    Hello all, i am looking for some help in finding out more about my 3rd great grandfather. His name was Isidro Manuel Gonzalez he was born in matehuala san luis potosi mexico 1860 and died in 1939 under the name of isidro ruiz, in a ranch located in matehuala called la cabra also in san luis potosi mexico. What i am getting at is that both of his biological parents passed young. His dad in 1864 and his mom in 1877 two years before isidro married in 1879. In his marriage record he is listed as isidro ruiz. the last name ruiz came from a man named doroteo ruiz who i believe took him in after his mothers passing. Because a year later when isidro became a father the grandparents listed were pioquinta cortez biological mom who had passed and doroteo ruiz who is mentioned as an adoptive paternal grandfather, which leads me to believe that isidro may have changed his name from isidro gonzalez to isidro ruiz sometime before his marriage. Any guidance in this is greatly appreciated.

      @Martin Medrano1

      You are very blessed to find out the amount of information that you have. I think it would be unlikely that you could find out the whys. Your best bet would be to find a family History book that would explain some of the events. You have done a great job, getting where you are at. Sorry I can not add any help, only encouragement.

      I agree with the previous reply.

      The only thing that I might suggest would be to see what you might find regarding adoption records. That long ago in Mexico the record keeping outside of the churches might be very limited but it would be worth looking if you haven't already done so. One other thought would be to check DNA and see what it tells you. Of course it would require that you have the test done, here again, if you haven't already done that.

      This is the son of Isidro that i was referring to. When Isidro first became a dad he listed the paternal grandparents as adoptive grandparents. look at page 58 record 1145. His sons name was Zeferino Ruiz

      This might be reaching a bit, but do you think it’s possible that he was really listing the god-parents and not adoptive parents? Would that make any sense? I’ll get out my magnifying glass tomorrow and translate a bit more closely but it might be an interesting thought to sleep on. Also, are any of this family in Family Search yet? That would make the research easier and I suggest putting this record of Zefarino in the Memories section.

      Buen Noche, Hermano.

      The FamilySearch Catalog has Mexico, San Luis Potosí, Miscellaneous Records, 1570-1882 at https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2040013

      It may be possible that adoption records can be found there. The records are not indexed.

      I suggest you take a look at this link in Family Search https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QG93-J75F and see if by researching the relatives you can find something useful. I translated the document you included but could not link anything there.

      Good Luck,

      Robert Helmig
