Samuel KENNEDY b. c1825, 'Ireland'
Hello All,
I am attempting to navigate this family roadblock once again, and am hoping that the brilliant minds here can point me to new resources that may help me locate where in 'Ireland' Samuel is from and any information relating to his parents or siblings.
What I know:
1860: Indicated on the birth certificate of Samuel Kennedy NEIL. 20 March 1860, Dunlop Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire
1861 census: Coal Miner boarding with William NEIL, his sister Martha NEIL and nephew Samuel K NEIL at 34 College Wynd, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. 38 years, b. Ireland
1862 Marriage: Coal miner married Marth NEIL on 8 April 1862. Church of Scotland. X his mark. Bachelor. 37 years. Both are living at College Wynd, Kilmarnock. PARENTS: Halliday KENNEDY (deceased). Labourer and Lydia LATTA/O (deceased)
1871 census: Coal miner. 57 Robertson Place, Kilmarnock. 50 or 56 (?) years, b. Ireland Children: Samuel, Elizabeth, William, and Annie
(neither daughter's names come from wife Martha's family names ie. Susan, Janet, Margaret, or Samuels mother's name - so naming patterns haven't been useful so far)
1873 death certificate: 4 February 1873. Pauper married to 'Sarah' NEILL. 55 Robertson Place, Kilmarnock. 55 years. Parents: KENNEDY and Unknown. The informant is a neighbour - Archibald (?)
So, based on that information, are there any specific resources I could be looking through?
Thank you in advance,
Fiona

Well now! Good question
Did people who moved from Ireland to Scotland come from the Northeast of Ireland (County Antrim, County Down County Londonderry) or did they come from further afield.
There was a lot of movement from the northeast across to Lanarkshire - they are only 20 miles or so apart.
Realistically they could have come from anywhere on the Island. One interesting thing - they attended the Scottish Church. That COULD narrow down what parish records you need to look at (church of Ireland/Presbyterian).
John Grenhams surnames distribution map for Kennedy shows the name fairly well distributed across the island. So that was no use.
It would be down to the parish register which would be held in PRONI - but the problem is which parish register. Get that & you're back to 1800.
The most noticeable thing to me is the parents names on the marriage register - "Halliday Kennedy" to Lydia ??? (could do with that maiden name) and then Robert Neill & Susan. Halliday Kennedy..... - that is really interesting. Is Halliday one of his parents/grandparents surnames??
It MIGHT be worth trying one of the pay to view (and I hate having to recommend paying) sites- they have turned up the missing often enough - not always but you never know. Also bounce it into one of the facebook sites - people are really helpful there- its free - and you never know. These are the ones I know of - That Halliday Kennedy - that could well be the one to go for - there cant have been that many... could there?

Hello!
Yes, the spread of the KENNEDY names in Ireland seems to be pretty wide. Therefore, a look for the mother Lydia LATTA, of which there are fewer, seemed to be an avenue to follow. However, I wasn't able to determine if anyone of them were connected to the KENNEDY name so I dropped that for now - though it looks like it's time to pick up that thread again.
Halliday is certainly an uncommon name, which I have come across, in Ireland, but never as a KENNEDY. It definitely was NOT handed down the family line.
I'll check out those sites that you have suggested.
Again, thanks for your consideration and reply,
Fiona
