I would like to where to look and how to find records. As I understand, in the Azores, when a child is born, he does not have a last name but when he becomes and adult, he can choose to take either of his parents last names or something different. Is this true?
Thank you for any help you can provide

In Massachusetts Marriages, 1841-1915 available on FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6P74-QPK?i=198&cc=1469062&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AN46R-D3P
it states that Eugene was born in "St. Vicente, C de V Is." It was indexed as being in the Virgin Islands.
Were did find information that he was born in the Azores? I am just trying to find more info so to locate his records. 😉

I checked some more and found a birth register for Marie Lorette Lima which states that Eugene and his wife are from "St Vicent, C V Is.". This makes me think of São Vicente, Cabo Verde (Cape Verde Islands). Here's the link: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9TBK-SMQR?i=226&cc=1928860

In this link, you can read in the "Seaman's Journal" the same reference "C V Is". "The voyage from New Bedford to St. Vincent, C. V., is expected to be made in twelve to fifteen days."
And in the text it shows it means Cape Verde.
"has just been purchased
by Abilio Monteiro de Macedo, President of
the Cape Verde Islands and West Africa Trad-
ing Corporation. She will run between New
Bedford and the Cape Verde Islands in the
fall and spring and between the islands and the
African coast during the winter months"
