John Gliddon & Mary Tregull - Week St. Mary, Cornwall
1) In Week St. Mary Parish there is a marriage – John Gliddon & Mary Tregull (ors) 09 June 1652 (see attached from Phillimore Cornwall Parish Registers – Marriages). near bottom pg 52
2) Need assistance with some confusion seen in all Family Trees in Ancestry & Family Search regarding John Gliddon & Mary Tregull. They have listed up to four children, three born in Week St Mary and one in Bideford, Devon.
Week St. Mary – Baptisms Walter son of John Gliddon 29 Jun 1644
Margery daughter of John Gliddon 21 Feb 1647
Nathaniel son of John Gliddon 23 Jun 1650
Bideford – Baptism Joseph son of John Gliddon abt 1648
Notice that all the baptisms were before they were married and all Family Trees have John Gliddon & Mary Tregull deaths as 09 June 1652 , which is actually the day they were married. Therefore, all the four births are well before they were married which is unlikely. I cannot find another going back for John Gliddon in Week St. Mary until John Gliddon & Mary Phillips marriage 26 Nov 1614. They had six children between 1615-1630 with son John Gliddon baptism 23 Mar 1627 who married Mary Tregull. I could not find any children baptisms for John Gliddon & Mary Tregull after their marriage date in Week St. Mary up to the marriage of Nathaniel Gliddon & Mary Elliott 25 Oct 1672 in Week St. Mary.
Joseph is the son of John Gliddon from Bideford, Devon who is about the same age as the John Gliddon in Week St. Mary and their wives were both names Mary. I have a copy of John Gliddon’s will from Bideford and confirms that Joseph was his only son and that his parents are Richard Gliddon & Dorothy M. of Bideford. The one thing of notice is that the will is from 1652 which complicates the problem.
Question: If John Gliddon baptized 23 Mar 1627 is the father of Walter, Margery & Nathaniel? then who was John Gliddon's 1st wife named Mary______?, with Mary Tregull being his 2nd wife? There is a John Gliddon in the adjacent parish of Jacobstow, who had children Elizabeth b:1654 and John b:1655 from OPC website, but no parish transcripts for the time period needed are available to review.

All the baptisms you list do not give the name of the mother so there is no certainty that Mary was the mother - whether Mary Tregull or some other Mary. Having only taken a fairly brief look, I think it likely that Mary Tregull was his second wife. There is a marriage of a John Gliddon to Katheryne BITHEWYN in 1746 in Launceston. At 10.2 ml from Week, this is plausible but a bit distant.
Just because a number of people have Mary Tregull as the mother does not prove it is correct! Chances are high that most simply copied it blindly from one person. That is a common practice on Ancestry and, doubtless, elsewhere.
Worth looking for a burial of Katheryne in Week. The FindMyPast burials do not go that far back.

The reason that it's possibly Mary as John Gliddon's 1st wife is that Nathaniel Gliddon baptism was 23 Jun 1650 son of John Gliddon. A Mary Gliddon burial was 13 May 1651 and John Gliddon married Mary Tregull 09 Jun 1652. The problem is that I only know that a John Gliddon fathered (3) children; Walter bap1644, Margery bap1647 & Nathaniel bap1650 from parish transcripts in Week St. Mary. If John Gliddon bap1627 is correct with parents John Gliddon & Mary Phillips married 26 Nov 1614, that would mean John was 17yrs old when Walter was born in 1644.
I already looked at John Gliddon married to Katheryne Bithewyn 17 Jul 1746 from St Mary Magelene - Launceston and dismissed this possibility.
Yes, I did notice on Family Search & Ancestry family trees that John Gliddon & Mary Tregull error were just copied across all trees.
Cheers, Dave.
