Japanese mother's family

Any help would be appreciated. I don't even know where to begin my search. My mother Tsuneko Yamagishi passed away in 2015. She married and American and moved to the US. I only know one of her brother's names which was Kazuo Yamagishi. I know that she was from the Kanagawa-ken area.

I would suggest DNA testing at 23andme and Ancestry. You might get a close match to work with, maybe.

Also look for any immigration paperwork or records.

My daughter in law was adopted, I was able to find her mother and I flew to Aomori and met her. So it is possible, but it will be a major project. I am still working on the family tree. Not long after I met her we lost contact due to the covid deal.

Do you have an account in Ancestry? I found a Kazuo Yamagishi who died in 1974 in Japan in Ancestry.

If you do not have an Ancestry account, you can go to a FamilySearch Center and use their portal to access Ancestry for free. To find the Public Member Accounts, follow these instructions.
