Post Your Questions Here
If you have a question, or need help in any way relative to this Group, Post your question or request your help in Discussions. Try to be as specific as you can, e.g., instead of saying “I need help with my grandmother, Ma Kettle”, say “I am trying to find my grandmother’s, Ma Kettle, birth record.” Also, provide as much information as you already know about Ma Kettle and where it can be found so the person(s) who help you have enough information to get started, e.g., your name, your parents' names, Ma Kettle's birth place and year and her parents’ names, and Ma Kettle's FamilySearch personal identification number, etc.

Hello,
I am working on my family tree and I have run into a snag. I can’t find information on my great aunt. I know she existed as I have photos of her and she was mentioned in my grandmother's obituary in 1950 but I can't find any information on her past the 1905 South Dakota State Census.
Here is my story: my great grand father's name was Peter M. Hanson, date of birth 18 Nov,1868, born in Norway. His wife was Keri P. (Bakken) Hanson, born 13 March, 1876 also in Norway. They were married in 1895 and settled in Brookings County, South Dakota near Hendricks, MN. They had 4 children, Bertha Charlotte born 27 May 1896, Hans Otinius born 26 Jan 1898, Stella Alieda, born approx, 1900-1901 and Clarence Oscar born 23 Jan 1908. Peter, their father died 26 Sep1908 and Keri, their mother died 27 Feb 1909.
Both are buried in the Singsaas Church cemetery in Hendricks, MN.
The youngest, Clarence, was given up for adoption and was given the last name Kvernmo, and was raised in Hendricks MN. From the Us census it looks like Hans may have been adopted by a Torgerson family but they never changed his name and Bertha went to live with her grandparents who also lived in the area. Ole & Bereth Bakken. I don’t know what happened to Stella. In Bertha's obituary in 1950, it said she was survived by two brothers and one sister, Mrs. George Peterson from Milwaukee, Wisconsin so I know she lived and got married. I just can't find any information on when she was born nor what happened to her after her parents died.
I’m hoping you can give me some idea on where to look. I contacted the church hoping that they would have some records but have found nothing so far. The county recorder said they don't have birth certificates on file over 100 years old.
Thank you. Kerry Johnson-Morud

Kerry,
Do you have FamilySearch ID#s for Stella, her siblings or her parents?
Thanks,

I think I may have figured it out. Bertha Hanson Peterson's ID is GM32-PKH. I've been doing my family tree on ancestry.
Bertha's siblings: Hans Hanson GN4P-JR1, Stella A. Hanson GN4G-LK8, Clarence GN4P-41L.
I hope this is what your looking for.
Thanks,

If you search in Ancestry for “Stella A Peterson” (her married name) born about 1901, I think you will find that her name was actually “Estella A Hansen” (Stella is often short for Estella and HansEN is the common way of spelling the surname in Norway, where her parents were from), she was born in South Dakota, she is in the 1930, 1940 and 1950 US Censuses married to George August Peterson, and much more. I hope this is what you are looking for.

I wasn’t sure if that was her. I have many photos of her as Bertha her sister, was my grandmother and no where did they have her name spelled Estella nor Hansen. I'm trying to figure out where she went after her parents died, if she was adopted or who took her in. I found this written in my grandmothers bible, but I don’t know who wrote it. It could be her grandmother after her parents died . It’s so easy to pick the wrong person. I've seen it time and time again.

my name is “Ronald“, but I always refer to myself as others do as “Ron”. Ronald/Ron, Estella/Stella. My last name is “Olson”, because I am Swedish, but most people write my name “Olsen”,, Which is Norwegian/Danish. Olson/Olsen, Hansen/Hanson. I think Estella Hansen is your person, plus she is married to a guy with the correct name and I believe they live in the correct place, and I believe on some censuses she is referred to as Estella and others as Stella.
