Birth of Arthur Albert Smith c. 1872 (my paternal GF)
I have been trying for TEN years to find the BIRTH of my GF Arthur Albert Smith !!!
Various censuses give Wales/S.Wales/even Neath (although that's unlikey)....even Wales may be unlikely?
However, TWO sources have his DOB as 16 June 1872.
- His G.P.O. pensions records
- The 1939 Register ........ incidentally, I have written a book (The Lapidary, on Amazon), a biography of my father Thomas Arthur Smith, and would obviously like to include his father.
Further detailed info, and possible clues, are included on my 'Smith Family Tree' on the Ancestry website (if you can find it .... good luck with that! 😂)
I hardly expect miracles after all this time, and my eternal research..... but hey!..who knows?
Thanks in advance to the Community (from a Newbie Member),
kind regards,
Peter Arthur Smith

The General Register Office has three entries for 1872
SMITH, ARTHUR ALBERT, Mother's Maiden Surname: - FAIRWEATHER GRO Reference: 1872 J Quarter in HARTLEPOOL Volume 10A Page 228
SMITH, ARTHUR ALBERT, Mother's Maiden Surname: -LACEY GRO Reference: 1872 D Quarter in SAINT OLAVE SOUTHWARK Volume 01D Page 277
SMITH, ARTHUR ALBERT, Mother's Maiden Surname: - LEWIS GRO Reference: 1872 D Quarter in FAVERSHAM Volume 02A Page 737
The first one has a registration in the June Quarter but that doesn't rule the others out as the birth might have been registered later. If you have your grandmother's maiden name that will help you even further.
If you haven't registered with the GRO it is easy and free. You will have to pay for any copies of the records you want.
I hope these are of some use, even if it's not you can still use the GRO for other research.
Best regards and happy ancestor hunting.

Thank you Cedar, very much appreciated.
However, I cannot be certain of the mother's surname..... although I've had several punts in the past.
(even put one or two on my tree to see if HINTS come up)
without trawling back on previously discounted certs., I certainly remember the Hartlepool one & followed that one through, without confirmation. I was rather keen at one time as the mother (on some records) gave Newcasstle/Gateshead as her birthplace ....did you see my 'smith family tree' on Ancestry?... it gives a fair bit of info.
Although, I don't think the other two are likely.
Obviously, he might just have been registered as 'Arthur' ....and MAY even have had a different surname at birth? Perhaps born in Wales, and as you found, may have been registered in England?
But, despite several censuses giving birthplace as Wales ...I've yet to find him. 🤔
thanks again, 😀
kind regards,
Peter
