I am excited to share this Ancestor Treasure. I finally framed this Valentine's Day Card that I have had for longer than I want to admit that I am old! When I first obtained this card, I didn't have the story to go with it. It took years for me to learn the rest of the love story.
Fourteen-year-old Miles Henry Murphey gave this Valentine to his twelve-year-old sweetheart Myrtle Ray Romer in 1907! Miles announced that he would marry her when they attended grammar school in Kentucky. Miles told her when she was nine years old that he would marry her when they grew up. They were told "little boys and girls do grow up." Miles moved with his family to Missouri and Myrtle remained in Kentucky. When Miles turned eighteen, he was unable to find work out 'west,' so he became a nurse in the army. he was honorably discharged 15 Nov. 1914. He returned to Kentucky and discovered Myrtle lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He came to Pennsulvania in April and they were married 28 August 1915. Miles was 22 and Myrtle was 20 years old.

Carolyn, I just checked, and my husband is a 1st cousin removed a few times from Miles! Through Miles’ mothers’ Hendricks line I was born in IL, so I thought it would be me. Lol Kathy

Kathy, it is a small world! I would be happy to share any information that I might have about this family with your husband. If you click on my name, you can send me a private message with more details. I will check to see what I might be able to share with you. Years ago, I went to some courthouses and copied records from an old cardboard box. I also can suggest links to cemetery records, etc for that area. I'd love to connect with family.

Kathy, the couple that shared this Valentine are my great-grandparents. They lived near me for a short time when I was a child, so they were the grandparents that I knew the best.

Oh thank you, but if you’ve put it in FS I’m good. I have done a lot of research in IL myself, hence why I was surprised it tied into my husband’s line. Hopefully I’ll see you at Roots Tech!
