Witnesses - wife Karoline Ulriksen and ??? Thorvald Andreasen...

On the far right is the date 9/1 97, what is that?

I am having a hard time finding their marriage record.

That 9 January 1897 date is the date the name of the father was reported to the authorities.

 

Here they are in the 1900 census along with a second daughter. So they did get married.

The date must be between 1897 and 1900. Could have been in Lier or in his residence of Røyken or her residence of Modum.

Searh the marriage records for Sylling and or Lier and possibly Røken between December of 1796 and prior to the birth of their daughter Matilde and you should find their marriage date.

Thank you for your answers. I had found them in the 1900 and 1910 censuses as well and knew that they were married between the first and second children. I have looked for the marriage record in those parishes as well, but will look again. Perhaps I missed it! I'm glad to know that the date given on Karen's birth record indicates the day the father was reported. I really appreciate your experitise, both of you!

I did spend some time looking repeatedly thorough the parish records for all the subparishes in Leir and in Røken as well as in Modum and Øvre Eiker and could not find a marriage record.

 

Don't give up, keep looking, but maybe it missed being recorded? I have a couple of people who do not birth records. I have seen a couple of instances where it looks like an event happened outside a person's home parish so that priest didn't put it in his book but the home parish priest never put it in his either.
