Tuam, Co. Galway
I just want to make sure that Sylane Parish of Church Friar and Lakeview (Tuam) in Registrar's District #2 (on bith records, but can't actually find these places listed for that Registrar's District- except if Sylane is same as Sylaun, I know there is a Sylane in Tuam currently, but don't know what Sylane Parish of Church Friar is- and I have absolutely no idea about the entry that says Lakeview Tuam), are actually in Tuam.
Thanks so much!😊

Hi @Diane Henriks can you please share a link to the specific record(s) so we can see what you mean?
Tuam is a PLU (Poor Law Union) or Registrar's District. John Grenham's great website is a good place to start as there are maps of civil parishes, Roman Catholic parishes, and PLUs.

Yes, thank you, I use his site along with a few others all the time...I'm getting that Sylane is a township in the Parish of Belclare in the district of Tuam, County Galway, but would like to make sure.
Lakeview, I have no idea...there is a Lakeview in another area, but this specifically says Tuam. I'm thinking it may be an old house or old road?
I will attach the 2 records...one is for Margaret Corless (the majority of the kids were born here), the other is for Martin Corless.
Thank You so much!

P.S., neither Sylane, nor Lakeview are in Tuam #2, that's why I am having trouble :)

I found a reference to Belclare and Sylane, in the parish of Cummer. Cummer is #29 on this map. Near the top, on the right, just under where "Diocese of Tuam" is labeled.

And on another query about Churchfriars, I found this description which fits with Beclare -
'As far as I know Churchfriars is located in Belclare, a few miles outside Tuam. There was an old monastery there at some stage. There is a ruin of a later parish church on the site now. If you know Belclare, the entrance to this church is about 150m before you get to Canavan's pub on the left hand side if you heading out from Tuam direction. There is a sign with a list of burials at the graveyard around this church. I'd say this is the townland you are looking for. I haven't heard of Churchfriars as an area in the actual town. Hopefully this helps a little'.

And in the Tithe Applotments, the townland is listed as Silane in the Parish of Belclare.

Thank you so much for getting back to me!
I had found those references also, but was still confused because of other references.
There are references in old newspaper articles to a Sylane, Tuam...do you happen to know when it came into existence? Also, I see a towland of Sylane under Belclare, and a townland of Tuam under Belclare...could they have still been in Belclare Parish, but the townland of Tuam for Martin? ALso, Martin lists Tuam as his place of birth on his U.S. Nat record ;)
So were they born in Belclare or Tuam?... so confused about this one
Usually if I have any brick wall to anything, it's a person; this is my first place brick wall, haha! 😂
