Are volunteers assigned to a country to work on Standard Place Names. Some of the New Zealand names need some work.
example I came accross was "town, Southland, Southland, New Zealand". It should be "town, Southland, New Zealand"
Can non Church members volunteer to to help?

I'm not sure that "Masterton, Wairarapa, Wellington, New Zealand" is the best standardization. The Wairarapa is an informal region, not a district of New Zealand. If you're using the post-1989 local government areas then it should be "Masterton, Masterton, Wellington, New Zealand" (town, district, region, country). But maybe there was a district called Wairarapa before 1989? Who knows, the history of New Zealand local government is so complex.

Hi A van Helsdingen I'm knew to this but I'm sure my relatives who lived in Featherston would strongly disagree. They believed/ knew they lived in the Wairarapa.

The South Wairarapa District Council, based in Martinborough, is the local government authority for areas south of Carterton, encompassing the towns of Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough and the rural areas down to the Hutt. It is separated from Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt cities by the Rimutaka Ranges

It will all depend on what system FS is using to standardize place names in New Zealand. But almost always these systems are based around legally defined local government areas and subdivisions. Many of my ancestors lived in a region of the Netherlands commonly called "Salland", but since it has never been formally defined and is an informal, geographical area rather than a political unit it does not feature in standardized place names. Instead the standardized place names for the towns they lived in refer to the provinces and municipalities, whose boundaries go back over 200 years and have been stable and formally defined.

That's Good to know. Yes, non-members and members are welcome to help build the FamilySearch Places database.
