Finland. Church records indicate Karl Alfred Carlsson (Almgrén) took back the family name of Söderberg in 1885. I'm not sure why the name change and when it happened, but I'm having difficulty determining family members prior to Carl Johan Almgrén (1827-1907) and Anna Lisa Carlsdr (1830-1885). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

What sources you have used while searching your ancestors?
Carl johan Almgren and Anna Lisa Carlsdotter were married in Jomala, Ahvenanmaa (Åland), Finland at 25.6.1854
Good sources are:
HisKi project (contains indexed birth/marriage/death records)
HisKi project - Parish list (genealogia.fi)
(Best results are gained with less information and it is wise to write 3-4 first letters of the name, not whole name.)
After using HisKi search you need to verify the family from original church records. Good source for that is Digihakemisto:
Digihakemisto (en-dot-digihakemisto.appspot.com)

In communion book Carl Johan Almgren is mentioned to be born at 9 Febr 1827 and in birth records there is one Carl Johan born on that day to Brita Caisa Zacharisdotter in Jomala, Åland, Finland

Anna Lisa Carlsdotter is born at 8 Sept 1830 to Carl Carlsson Söderberg and Maja Lisa Mattsdotter in Torp, Jomala, Åland, Finland

In addition to verifiable documentation I get from Ancestry, I have used parish records my mother brought back from Finland years ago. Unfortunately, these records don't go any further back than Carl Johan Almgrén and Anna Lisa Carlsdotter. I use HisKi project records all the time...they are excellent! Not familiar with Digihakemisto...will check it out. Do you know where the information of the original name change from Söderberg to Almgrén might have been recorded, or if it even was recorded? I've started separate research trees for both the Almgrén and Söderberg family names, hoping that might lead somewhere...maybe this is just a waste of time, but I'm hopeful. Not sure if I should be looking for a father of Carl Joh as an Almgrén or a Söderberg. Thanks for your response.

Yes, Shari, I had already seen and documented this record from Ancestry in my tree. Have been looking for Carl's parents, but thank you for your response.

I will definitely take a look at this, Heidi. It might not happen until tomorrow though as I've been at this all day. I will get back to you when I have a chance to review it. Thanks so much!

I see on the birth record for Carl Johan, a mother listed as Brita Caisa. It looks like she had a sister, Sophia, born in 1806. I’m not able to read everything in the box for her son Carl Johan. Is there anything here saying the father is unknown? Why are there two birthdates? Under “Comments” there is a date of 1828 with a word I can’t read. Could Carl Johan been given the Almgrén name as a result of Brita Caisa marrying an Almgrén or him being raised by an Almgrén family? Is it possible then that Carl Johan’s son, Carl Alfred Almgrén took back the family name (his mother’s father’s name of Söderberg) in 1885 because his father was unknown? PS...I just found a record indicating Brita Caisa died in 1833, so if Carl Johan would only have been about 6 years old.

Carl Johan was known as Britasson until sometime between 1843-1848 he took a surname of Almgren. His mother Brita Caisa never married and was always known with her patronymic (Zachariasdotter) and also her family only used patronymics, they did not have a family name.
Carl Johan did not work with someone named as Almgren and it is not a place name. There is no knowledge where he took that name.
Familysearch has Jomala's communion books indexed and here are links where he lived between 1829-1849.

Yes, Brita Caisa had a sister Sophia born in 1806.
In the box of Carl Johan, over his name is Sophia's daughter Anna Caisa (also illegitimate) born at 29.10.1828.
yes, Brita Caisa died in 1833 after giving birth to his second illegitimate son Gustaf.
Wife of Carl Johan was Anna Lisa, and her father was a tailor and he had a last name of Söderberg, most likely taken not herited (not sure, because I have not looked his history) when he started his profession as a tailor.
Annan Lisa was known with her patronymic (Carlsdotter) when she was married.
