The use of MC

If the Irish widely dropped the O and Mc during a period of difficult conditions, and then began reinstating them in the 1800's; should I research Colgin instead of McColgin in 1800-1840 or am I wrong in the timeframe. Any help would be appreciated. New to Irish research.
Thank you.

Absolutely research them all! And Colgen, Colgan with and without the Mc. Avoid the common trap so many of us have made by assuming there was consistent spelling of surnames in Ireland. There was not! People even signed their name various ways, if they were literate. This was true in all the world, even the U.S. until about the time of Social Security in 1936 when there was a big crackdown on inconsistencies.
Good luck!
