Census records can be found online from here in Canada
Most other records can be found online now some exceptions apply
I use the GRO all the time to seek out info on my family that mostly from Birmingham & surrounding areas
Ancestry is useful if you sign up for a fee
Family search main page has a lot of documents to search
even google the family name has brought up some good hints

Depending on the time period you are talking about, you will be able to find out many of the basic facts about your ancestors from online sources. Census records are online and go back to 1841. If you have ancestors in London, census records will give you exact addresses. The last time I was in London, I visited the home of my 3rd great grandmother, who lived with her son. I got the address from the 1901 census.
Another fact gleaned from the census was that her son (my second great grand uncle) retired from the post office. If I was in London right now, I would go to the Postal Museum - which also has pension records for post office employees (well, I guess not right now because the Museum is closed due to Covid). I would go to the Lambeth Palace Library to try to find the marriage allegation of my first cousin 3x removed. I am giving examples of places I would look for people in my family that lived in London because that is where you are.
Other places in London that have lots of records which are not online are the National Archives and The Society of Genealogists. If you find out your people were not in London, I would try to visit the County Records Office of the county where your people were. If your people were rural, there is a wonderful museum in Reading- not too far from London - called the Museum of English Rural Life. Unfortunately, many of these places are closed, but maybe there is hope that they can open in the near future. Good luck, you have a wonderful opportunity.
