Do you know his occupation and/or religion? In my experience, those are the main reasons people left England.

At this point I do not know either. Maybe I should pursue that question further. I’m sure exactly how to figure that out, but I can scan any known documents for birth of children etc to look for hints on that?

Yes, the more you know about him beyond just dates and places, the easier it will be pursue a reason. I would guess occupation is going to be a more likely reason here, but you never know. You might poke around on this site to see if you can find anything of interest. https://www.fibis.org/ particularly the wiki. Even if you don't find anything specific to William, you might see things that give you more ideas.

Do you happen to know if they needed permission to travel to India? I read that somewhere and have wanted to pursue any documentation relating to the “permission” to go to India.

Sorry, I don't know.

I think the "occupation or religion" searches will be valuable for you. I have English ancestors who left for either the U.S. or Australia due to religious reasons. I also have ancestors who left because coal mining became less essential. A distant cousin has British India history because her father had been sent their to establish railroads for the British Empire...occupation again. Best wishes with your search.
