I would appreciate any help or suggestions on how I can figure out what village my great-great Grand
I have attached two documents. One is a document of intent for George Miskho that lists the village as Tamas Gsargnata, Austria Hungary. The other document is a petition for naturalization that says he came to the USA on the vessel Carpathia to New York by way of Fiume in Europe. It lists Tamas, Austria. There is one more document attached to him on family search (L7GB-K56) that is the ship record from the Carpathia on 3 Jan 1906 that lists his residence place as Gyannata, Magyar.
George was a German speaking German Hungarian (Donube Swabian). He came to the USA by himself and married after his arrival.
Thank you.

I think he was from Temesgyarmat, a German-speaking village in Temes county. It was earlier known as Gyarmatha (matching the ship manifest). It's now Giarmata, Romania.
(The ubiquitous American error of truncating Austria-Hungary to just Austria can really confuse matters.)

That is what I was originally thinking. I found someone through rootsweb that has accesss to a Jahrmarkt family book for the time period of his birth. My ancestor was not it it. Is Giarmata the same as Jahrmarkt or is it maybe a different village?
I appreciate you so much for your help!!

::double-take:: I know Jahrmarkt as the (never-actually-used) German name of my parents' hometown of Balassagyarmat....
None of the gazetteers give a German name for Gyarmata, but Wikipedia has a disambiguation page for Jahrmarkt that lists Balassagyarmat and Giarmata.
Did the lookup in the family book include spelling variations (Miska, Misko, Mishka, Mishko, Mischka, Mischko, etc.)?

Wow! Balassagyarmat is your parents hometown!! That is amazing!!
I am not sure if they looked for any other spellings...I will certainly ask to see if they can look for me:) Good idea! Thank you for the help!

Julia, I am currently trying to find someone with the Jahrmarkt family book to check the alternate spelling possibilities for George Miskho. I can no longer find the person on rootsweb that helped me before. Hopefully, I can find someone with access to the book.

Julia-
I found several individuals to help me look up Miskho with all the spelling variations you mentioned plus a few more. They looked in both the the Jahrmarkt book and a few surrounding villages of Mercydorf and Sanktandreas. There was no Miskho variations in any of the catholic church family books in these towns. One of the genealogists from the banat group on rootsweb mentioned to me that catholic church family books are not necessarily complete for a couple of reasons. She said that these family books are not standardized and that the authors of each one can decide what families are included in the books. Sometimes, if the name does not sound German (like Miskho), they may decide to not include it.
The genealogist also suggested that there might be a possibility that my Miskho may have not been catholic at that time... they might have been orthodox.
For these two reasons, she thought that I should not give up looking in Jahrmarkt. She suggested that I find a genealogist in the Timisoara area of Romania that can look through records that contain everyone that lived there, instead of just the catholic family books.
Do you know anything about her suggestions? I thought it might be nice to get a second opinion before I try to locate and hire a genealogist in Timisoara. Is that the only way to get this information?
Thank you for all of your time!

Unfortunately, there's very little available online for places that are now in Romania. (Ditto for most of Serbia.) The advice to hire someone from the area is sound: in-person visits to the relevant archive are really the only way to get access to the vital registers.

Thank you for the input. Any advice on how to find a genealogist for Timisoara? Is there a list somewhere?

The best I can think of is to contact the Erdélyi Genealógiai Társaság (Transylvanian Genealogy Society). Their website (http://erdelygen.uw.hu/index.php) is pretty stale, but I know they're still around, so I suspect they've moved to Facebook (which I don't do).

Dear Becky,
I am following Your conversation because it reminds me of my quest to find my Grandparents. It's been very frustrating since they were born in Hungary--a part now in Romania. And lived in Kikinda--now in Serbia. Please continue to post your results.
I am not on facebook so I wouldn't be able to follow Julia's suggestion. And the transylvanian website was confusing. Wishing You success.

I know how you feel about the brick wall. I am still working on mine also. I am still trying to find a geneoplogist in Romania to help me. I will let you know if I get anywhere.
