Some governments require this procedure. It seems unlikely that the church would make such a decision except to obey civil laws. Just my opinion. Where did you hear of this policy?

This has also been the practice where people live several days away from the closest temple.

Church is global. We have to respect, obey laws of the land - wherever it is. Besides, many converts did civil marriage then did sealing after they met requirements for Temple.

One of the sisters at the church called me because she is really trying to make sure her girls have a temple marriage. 3 of her 5 girls are engaged now and if they see that a civil marriage is acceptable and they can just wait until whenever to be sealed she feels she is losing ground with them. She was very upset and I told her that wait, let's see what the leaders say and then go with that advice. To me and I mean to me,,,,, We are the true gospel and have our beliefs and I do not believe God
is behind some changes made by man. just to satisfy the way of the world.
We have to stand up for what we believe or we will stand for anything. The ways of the world are not always right.

This was not about converts, this was a sister that called me and said, I have 3 girls engaged now and we want them to have TEMPLE marriages, if they see that it does not matter and they can wait, I am losing ground with them.
We will do what ever we can to get them to the Temple first. We are the true church on this earth and we have to hold to our
beliefs, not just go willy nilly with what the world does.
If you don't stand for something, you will stand for anything. Please understand that some parents struggle to get the kids to do what is right, not what is popular. Thankyou

The point is that traveling for a week on a bus and staying at hotels each night is better for a couple if they are married. This is a reality in parts of the developing world. For 90% of members a temple is within 3 hours and this would not apply. A global church considers all circumstances in making policies.

@BonifieldNancyLynn1 BonifieldNancyLynn1 - Until you hear an announcement from the Prophet nothing has changed. You do know that because of regulations in many countries of the world that is what normally happens since the country doesn't recognize a marriage in the temple, the members have to marry civilly so that they can be sealed in the temple. Nothing has changed recently - like I say listen to President Nelson.

THANK YOU! Yes I am trying to help a sister that has struggled long and hard with her kids. She finally has these 3 going in the right direction per say. We are not talking about another country, we are talking about here. Thank you for your words I will pass them on to her, she does not use a computer so I am her helper.

The article was already linked, so I'll just add that they specifically said that people are encouraged to be married in the temple, so that is not going away. But this does give the option for people with non-member parents or close family to choose to have a civil marriage and then immediately go to be sealed. This is how it happens in much of the world already, because of local laws. Anyone could always have chosen to be married first and then sealed later, but now they don't have to wait the year. If your friend's girls were already planning on temple marriages, there wouldn't be any reason to change the plan, unless they have family circumstances that would make two separate ceremonies desirable.
