Hello,

I attended the Family Search “Find the Unknown Father in Sweden” by Geoffrey Fröberg Morris 2 weeks ago. The webinar was excellent and I have been using the suggestions offered to research several of my “Unknown” fathers. My next step is to ask your help in transcribing/translating a court document involving Baron Melcher Falkenberg and Elisabeth Nilsdotter, but first some background.

One of my direct line great grandmothers is Sara Melchersdotter (L5P8-LGR )born 27 Apr 1780 Trollebo Säteri, Lemnhult, Jönköping, Sweden. (ArkivDigital: Lemnhult (F) C:1 (1732-1806) Image: 62 Page: 117) I will attach a file with this record along with all HHE documents I have identified. In later life, she is always referred to as Melchersdotter.

 

The mother is listed in the birth/baptism record is Lisbeht Nilsdotter. Both she and Baron Melcher Falkenberg are living at Trollebo säteri, Lemnhult, Jönköping, Sweden in 1779-1780 time frame. Sara is born in April 1780.

 

The court document is from 13 June 1780. (ArkivDigital: Östra häradsrätt (F) AIa:46 (1779-1780) Image: 8530) Please see attached file.

 

This may be the only document that will confirm Melcher Falkenberg as Sara’s father. The time frame is far enough back that DNA matches are not helpful at this point. I am also hoping this will tell us more about Lisbeht Nilsdotter and where she is from (Does it say something about Isingtorp?) I have not been able to locate Lisbeht/Sara from 1780-1800. Neither Melcher or Lisbeht marry.

 

Any help with this document would be so appreciated!

Hello #[Jane Thompson]​, I have gone through the entry from the court record, looked at Family Tree, and some of the sources. I can see why you would question if Sara Melchersdotter is really the daughter of Melcher Falkenberg. The birth and household examination records do not give conclusive evidence, but the court record does. I have created a transcription of the entry and also a translated meaning. To summarize, the couple was summoned to court for committing fornication. When the charges were pronounced to the court, a document was submitted from Melcher Falkenberg which admitted to the offence. A similar document was submitted by Lisbeth Nilsdotter. The court convicted them and fined them accordingly, see the translated meaning below.

I have left blanks for the words that I don't understand.

Meaning:

Attorney and Kings Bailiff and trusted Svante Öltman has taken summon for lieutenant honorable Mr. Baron Melcher Falkenberg and the maiden Elisabeth Nilsdotter of Isingstorp for committing fornication. And when this was sounded (and) proclaimed Mr. Baron and lieutenant turned in such ____ _____ _____, because ___ is underwritten of attorney and Kings Bailiff Svante Öltman legally summoned to this court (for) trial of them to undergo for committing fornication and conceiving of a child with Elisabeth Nilsdotter of Isingstorp during the time she worked at Trollebo manor. For the sake ___ and ___ such in truth. I submit (to) the courts equitable judgement _____ the offence and also until it prefers support____ can.
