First, two clarifications: 1) The name that you have for your great-grandfather is not correct. Paraskeva is a female name and Sotiopoulos is not a correct spelling. I would venture that his name was Paraskevas Sotiropoulos. 2) I believe that Vlahopoulo is a rural village, about 40 kilometers from Kalamata. Regarding marriage information: in Greece, this is kept at the Metropolis (like an Archdiocese) for Messinia, or at the village church. For the late 1800s, it is doubtful that the village church would still have records going back that far. However, it is possible that the Metropolis would have records. However, before trying to get marriage information, you need to have more family information because the priests at the Metropolis will not do research for you. Try these steps first: 1) Check the Election Registers and Male Registers at MyHeritage to look for your family name in the area of Kalamata: https://www.myheritage.com/research/collection-10841/greece-electoral-rolls-male-registers-1856-1950?s=210681471. 2) My colleague, Gregory Kontos, has a website, GreekAncestry.net https://greekancestry.net/ and he gives free 1/2 consultations. Book a free consultation with him to see what records may be available for Messinia, which can help you learn more about your family. 3) Greg can also help you draft a letter to the Metropolis of Messinia to inquire about marriages. 4) Greg may also help you draft a letter to the Archives of Messinia to check for records there. It's important to have as much accurate information as possible before writing to repositories in Greece. Please keep us posted on your research! Carol Kostakos Petranek
