I am researching my pgggm, Gussie SCHOENHERTZ and have been for some time with no luck as to her pas
Two of her children were born in Galicia as well. Gussie came to the United States under the name Gusti Scheinhcer with Sali and Jenny on July 6, 1901 on the Konigin Louise. She was married to Samue Charles Schonehertz. She lived in New York until she passed. I would love to break the wall and find my ancestors such as her parents and her parents' parents. I have her Death Certificate and copies of birth certificates of her children that indicate her maiden name was Herstiel and her father's name as Chaskal Hirshstein and mother Rachel Rabinowitz. On her tombstone it said her father's name was Dov Ber. My great grandmother's (Jenny/Jane Schonhertz Fine's social security application indicates her mother's maiden name was spelled Hirshstein. Any help in determining the place she was born and the proper spelling of her name along with family information of her mom and dad would be greatly appreciated.

Gussie Schonhertz – death certificate. I have her death certificate and her parents are listed as Chaskall HERSTEIN and Rachael RABINOWITZ, but on her gravestone it says her father was named Dov Ber (translated by someone on Facebook).
Some names from other records show her as Gossi, Augusta, Gossie. Two birth records for her babies have her maiden name as HERZTIEL. I match DNA with a HERSTEL, but his grandfather was adopted and he does not have any information. I also match with a HERZTJEN but they do not write back.

Hi! In order to move forward, you’ll need to determine the hometown she came from because records were kept on a local level. I have a few suggestions for you:
- Get a translation of the Hebrew text on that headstone. Often there is more information there than is included in the English part of the headstone. You should be able to get a free translation through JewishGen View Mate.
- The passenger list has the place of last residence. To me it looks like Chrzanow. You can see more about that here on the Gesher Galicia town locator.
- Search databases at JewishGen and Gesher Galicia.

Thank you for the reply Ellie. The thing is I have been researching forever and cannot find any document to give me the exact place where she Gussie was born. I have searched exhaustively at JewishGen and Gersher Galicia. I have also had the tombstone translated and it did not give a mention to the town. It said "Here lies Mrs Gittel daughter of Mr Dov Ber followed by Hebrew date and acronym for May her soul be bound in the bonds of life."
I even called the cemetery and I found out that the family is buried in the Chrzanow Young Men's Association area. I contacted the president of the Association but they did not keep any records.
Do you have any other suggestions or am I stuck?

It's possible that if her last residence was Chrzanow, she could have been born there.
Have you tried checking the Polish State Archives to see what they have?
You can search the old version of the site here and the newer version here. Keep in mind that there is another place called Chrzanow - it's in Lublin, so if you see something that says Archive of Lublin, it's probably not the right one.
You can change the site to display in English, but many of the record descriptions will still be in Polish. The site can easily be navigated using Google Translate. If you are using the Google Chrome browser, just right click anywhere on the page and click Translate to English. If you are using a different browser (Safari, Firefox, Edge, etc.) you can still use Google Translate, but just with some extra steps. Go to translate.google.com and change the language settings to translate from Polish to English. Paste the URL into the Polish box and then click on the link that shows up in the English box. This will take you a translated version of the site.
