Does anyone here speak Romanian? I'd like to know if the surname Tamasiu is a Romanian version of th
My great-grandmother was born in Nagybànya in 1892. She moved to Budapest after the Treaty of Trianon. I've always known her to be called Tamàs Julianna, and her name appears like that in a 1952 death registry for one of her sons. But on her death registry it's written Tamasiu. A quick google shows this to be a Romanian name. The family was Hungarian. Item 22: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L94V-QFYH?from=lynx1UIV8&treeref=LVPG-D29&i=1141

Hi,
Maybe but as I read her surname was Tamasin not Tamasiu and I'm sure her name was not of Hungarian origin rather roman. Hungarian name would be Tamási or Tamás Julianna.
Do you understand all in this document?

Thanks! Yes, I understand all the document, I am fluent in Hungarian. I read it as Tamasin at fist, but then assumed it must be Tamasiu, I assumed there must be some Romanian parentage in her family history. Ruthenian never occurred to me. Here is the only other document I found for her, her son's death (from her first marriage), where it's spelled Tamàs, the Hungarian way.

FYI: Hi everyone, I often use this dictionary of Hungarian surnames as a cross-reference. It is especially helpful for less common names, which there are quite a few!

Tamasiu is not in there, but again it is probably of Romanian origin. If you do a Google search of "Tamasiu" you will see that all the individuals who come up in the search have Romanian first names (Ioan, Gheorghe, etc.).
