Preserving the paper research collections of past generations of family researchers
a case study
Over the past 30 years of my Yancey/Yancy family research - little by little I came to inherit many of the research collections of other researchers who eventually had passed on.
Over time - it must have been nearly a garage full of info.
what did I do with the info?
I digitized it (via high speed scanning) (over a period of about 2 years)

then much of it I uploaded to two places.
a family web site I maintain

Then - I uploaded much of it to FamilySearch Memories and hooked it to the FamilyTree record of the deceased person
I also ensure that a record for them existed on Findagrave,.com
Then I created a master page for all of these researchers
with links to Family Search, Findagrave and my own web site

This has been my way to ensure that the research of over a hundred year period
across numerous researchers - is being preserved.
in all we are talking about over 100,000 pages of material
(much of it scanned on high speed scanners that can scan at the rate of hundreds of pages per a few minutes) - as most office copiers these days can.
Any of you know of paper research collections that need preserving??

Thanks for your ideas. I need a high speed scanner! I have also been our family history keeper for 50 years and have cabinets of paper information.
I am trying to get all the pictures and pertinent handwritten letters attached to their owners on
familysearch, but now what do I do with the originals? I can't find family members who want them '
or perhaps who I would trust to keep them safe.
A teen niece is very interested in the digital end and doing temple work, but not so much in the paper stuff.

I don't have a high speed scanner (they are expensive) - I just use an office copy machine that does the high speed scanning.
after I digitized - I threw out - most of my paper copies - but kept most of my original material (photos) etc.

Archival quality sleeves are available for storage of original paper docs and photos. Check into these at your local stationary store, or online at amazon or any of the archival storage sites.

yes
but the type of paper I am talking about is thousands of pages of xerox copies of other stuff.
yes - original photos etc is great to be protected by archival material
but no need to keep most paper material that has been collected over decades -
get it digitized and throw out the paper
