Very DISAPPOINTING news ...
.
Just so you are prepared ...
.
"Family Tree" will
NO LONGER be using/displaying "Labels" (formerly "Badges")
on the "Person/Details" page/screen.
.
They are disappearing for ever ...
They will be no more ...
.
This is very disappointing news; especially, for Members of the Church; as, the (former: "Badges", now) "Labels" were ORIGINALLY created/used to 'Identify' the "Early Utah Mormon Pioneers"; and, rightly and proudly identified such.
.
Not so disappointing about the later "Labels", beyond that of the "Early Utah Mormon Pioneers"; but, a little so.
.
I just thought that you should all know; so that, you can be prepared, when Members of your Wards/Branches start, wondering what is going on; and, asking questions ...
.
Many Members of the Church, not only those from the "United States of America", from all around the World, have "Early Utah Mormon Pioneer" heritage/ancestry. Many Members of the Church from all around the World were so excited and proud that their "Early Utah Mormon Pioneer" heritage/ancestry was so prominently displayed on their Ancestors "Person/Details" page/screen. Regrettably, it is/will be no more.
.
Here is 'FamilySearch' "Blog" article on the situation:
.
The overall article:
FamilySearch Updates Enhance your Experience
https://www.familysearch.org/blog/en/familysearch-updates/
.
The particular update about no longer using "Labels":
Update: June 17, 2020—No Longer Using Labels
https://www.familysearch.org/blog/en/familysearch-updates/#labels
.
What is even more DISAPPOINTING was that there was no advance, 'Hint'; or, 'Suggestion'; or, 'Discussion', initiated/provided by 'FamilySearch' on what was going to be happening; so as, to enable Members of the Church to provide 'Feedback' on such happening - whether they agreed or disagreed with such happening.
.
Again, just so you are prepared ...

I haven't been a fan of the labels. I have lots of pioneer ancestors. I have some Mayflower connections. I also have some kings and "nobles" thrown in.
But my ancestry isn't any more important than any one else's.

I particularly liked the ORIGINAL "Badges" for the "Early Utah Mormon Pioneer" (ie. and, the 'Companies" associated with that "Overland Travel").
.
I was NOT a fan of the "Change" from "Badges" to "Labels"; and, certainly NOT the subsequent (unnecessary) proliferation of the "Labels", beyond that of the "Early Utah Mormon Pioneer"; and, the subsequent Church related "Labels".
.
I was not interested in the Kings/Queens/Nobility/Politicians/Educators/Mayflower connects/ETC,Etc,etc ...
.
And, that is despite the fact that I have MANY such in my Ancestral lines ....
.
I am NOT from the North or South American continents; but, I found that I do have MANY "Early" Church Members in/throughout my Ancestral lines (from all around the World); and, I have helped many (both old and new Members of the Church) in my country (and, from all around the World), find out that they ALSO have "Early" Church Members in/throughout my Ancestral lines - for us it is EXCITING and quite EMOTIONAL.
.
We were (and, have been) so excited and proud that the "Badges" (later: "Labels") of our "Early" Church Members was so prominently displayed on our Ancestors "Person/Details" page/screen - So SAD to see it DISAPPEAR - without any warning.
.
And, that last sentence of yours is a 'Given' ...
.
No ones Ancestry is more important than any one else's ...
.
But ...
That said ...
.
EVERYONE'S Ancestry IS important to THEM ...

Having a label attached does not mean that that person is any more important than another, it is just interesting to know. As a first generation member of the church, I don't have direct ancestors from the early history of the Church, but I have ancestors who were pioneers in their own right.

Family History is about the person's "history". Why is the church becoming like the world and trying to erase it!! And what do you care about what's on others family trees. It for that family to see and enjoy, not you.
I'm very disappointed in this also.

I think the operational word here is "pride". We are no better unless we do better. We need to watch out for it. My experience with family history research and preparing temple ordinances is that the Spirit is quickly grieved ".... when we undertake to ... gratify our pride, or vain ambition..." (D&C 121:37). We should be humbly and quietly grateful for a good heritage and that's enough.

Exactly. There pioneers and heros throughout our shared family tree.

@Willis Whitlock I have been told I have very close connections to royalty on both sides of my family. I have no idea how to research this. Can you help?
0 -
@Brett . So now it brings myself and I'm sure others to the question of how do learn of these things? Is it a one by one read each person's memories, sources, etc.?
Does this change lose this information connected to these people if their families have not personally added these facts to their sources, life sketches, memories, etc?

No matter one's earthly status, we are all equal in the eyes of our almighty God. Perfection never comes in this life.
We are each pricelessly blessed by the lives of our ancestors. There are two spectacular choices they made. First, they chose to live and second they chose to have posterity. Because of them we get to be us!

I’m happy to help any one with family history. My goal is to turn my heart and the hearts of my descendants to our fathers. I haven’t specifically set out to find my relationship to any particular person or group.
As you suggested in another post, it is just starting where you are. Go from the known to the unknown.
chances are you have earthly royalty some where back there. But here’s the thing. In almost every instance of “royal families”, some one killed someone else to get the throne. Often large quantities of some one elses were killed.

Here’s a tip. Run ancestor names through google, Wikipedia, or the like. You may find your kin to be more notable than you realized.

Also, find out about places your family lived. And the events affecting people in those places. You’ll find nobility along the way.

Family Search is not about individual family trees but the whole of mankind. We do not need labels. We are all children of our Heavenly Father.

For members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, family history research is done mainly to enable the members to perform temple ordinances for their ancestors. We believe that those ancestors then have the agency to accept or reject those ordinances. When I am working on my family tree, whether a person does or does not have "pioneer' ancestry really doesn't enter into my concern. I think it is a little fun to see if you tie into that background and I like to talk to members who do. Family tree as the whole of mankind is just a compilation of all the individuals place on the website. Having pioneer ancestors (I have no direct line) is neither good nor bad, just interesting. Honoring one persons ancestry does not make mine any less important.

I have been doing family history for years, currently serve as the leader in our ward, and until this post, I have never known what a "label" or "badge" was.
If it goes away, it makes no difference to me.

Me too! Oh well, we still appreciate the updates and improvements to this glorious site.

I personally liked to see what pioneer company a relative was in or if they were mentioned in the Joseph Smith papers, etc. I have learned more about my relatives this way that I wouldn't have been able to any other way. I don't have time to read all the Joseph Smith papers for a relative's name but I was able to learn more about her by the badge. It was so neat to read about a court case she was involved in as a midwife witness. I wouldn't have found that bit of information about her life any other way. I was also impressed with how legal matters were handled in the early years of the church. Very impressive to see how orderly they were and how the upheld and followed the laws. All this information came because of a badge and I wouldn't have had the knowledge or time to find this on my own. Not pride, just gratitude for their lives of faith and testimony that were passed down.
I see how the official statement says we can still add this information to their stories or memories but like I said before, I wouldn't know where to find this information or even know how to add a record of it. (This particular relative is locked so there is no way I can add the information I read about her.) How would I know what relative was in a pioneer company and how would I find out which one? I'm sure there is a source somewhere but why make all of us do that work on our own when it has already been done? Again, I am sad because it saved so much time and was a quick link to the source. It seems like that information will be lost to me and my family now.

Good point. I would address your concerns with the Family Search staff.

Another way to see your ancestors who are featured in the Joseph Smith Papers, Missionary Service, World War I and World War II and multiple other databases is to see your own family using the Planner. The different campaigns created highlight the members of your Tree. Go to Help > Helper Resources > Planner. Your name will be at the top right-hand corner.
0 -
I see my name in the planner but now what? I don't see a link from their to Missionary service, etc
0 -
When you click on your name it should open to the Discovery Ideas/Family History Activity Ideas page. There you should see tiles containing the different records your ancestors appear in. Here are some of what I see for my family:
- Pioneer Ancestors
- Ancestor's Headstones
- Pioneer Children
- Missionary
- Women of Faith
- Nauvoo
- Joseph Smith Papers
When I click on the tile, I can see the detail for each ancestor included in that record set. Does that help?

yes it does help - thank you!

I'm going to try relative finder. @ladawnmoon1 ladawnmoon1 Just a reminder to put the @right next to the name you want to get your message.
Could you provide me with a link?
