As you look over the page, most of the farm names have the same suffix of a capital E with a scrawl.

 

This addition to the farm name usually means, I think, that the father does not own the farm, but is a husmann or tenant farm on a section of it. This usage is more common in the eastern areas of Norway. I don't recall ever seeing it in the western part. It was definitely not used in Hordaland where most of my wife's family is from but I see it a lot in the Buskerud area where one branch originated.

Is there a reference guide to farm names and parishes?

Try this site to search for farm names in Norway: https://www.dokpro.uio.no/rygh_ng/rygh_form.html .

Keep in mind that this site references farms in the late 19th century. Over time many of the farm names have evolved. So you may need to "think outside the box" how spelling and pronunciation of names may affect what is in the site now. Also, sometimes farms disappeared and you won't find them in the site.

 

In searching for a farm name, start typing the name in the field for "Farm Name" and a list of farms will appear. As you continue adding letters, the number of choices becomes shorter. Look for names that might be similar to what you are searching for. When you get one you think may be a match, click on it in the list and then click on "Search". You can also get a list of all the farms in a parish by searching in the "Parish" field by doing the same thing-find name of the parish, click on it, then on "Search".

 

Another great site is http://norwayparishes.com/ . If you select the County in the search box on the left side of the page, a box will appear on the right side (Blue box with white lettering) "Farm List", click on that and you will be sent to Oluf Rygh:Norwegian Farm Books and a list of the farms in that county. Keep in mind, too, that this is a list as of the late 19th century. Norway Parishes site has maps and satellite imagery, that can give you a little richer experience. Look under the "Legend" to see how to change from maps to satellite.

The farm name is Nes, also spelled as Næs. It is located in Svenes Parish in Nord-Aurdal. You will find Guri's father, Ole Eriksen listed as the son of Erik Olsen and and Guri Ingebretsdatter at Næs Farm in Svenes in the Norway Census for 1801. He is listed in the 2nd family, and Ole is 26 years old.
