What has been most helpful in learning how to "translate" Italian records? Did you learn the words?

The easiest way is to make a text available (even manuscript, but legible) to a friend who knows enough English😊

I found these videos here helpful. https://www.familysearch.org/ask/learningViewer/87
I also use Italian word lists and google translate. I usually can figure out enough information on forms, but still need help on most Italian records that are totally handwritten. When I am really stuck I will share the document here on this Italian research group or a Facebook group to get help with translation. Response time is usually pretty quick.
The book "Italian Genealogical Records: How to Use Italian Civil, Ecclesiastical & Other Records in Family History Research" by Trafford Cole is also very helpful.

I hope that helps. I love researching my Italian heritage. Good luck in your Italian research.

For quick and dirty help, the Family Search Wiki for Italy has a genealogical word list. Print this out and use it. It's especially handy when traveling to different repositories. I would also save a digital copy of it, so you can Ctrl-F to find things.
Most helpful: Get a copy of Italian Genealogical Records by Trafford Cole and read it cover to cover, the entire thing. You will learn to identify key words and phrases in the 'acts.' Yes, they do contain a fair amount of boilerplate. Even better, you will learn the context of the records, what to expect in particular records, and the timelines for different types of records.
Another nice book to look at: The Family Tree Genealogy Guide by Melanie Holtz. She covers some record types Cole does not. It's a newer publication and so a little 'fresher.' However, I found Cole's book fascinating and not hard to read at all.
You might also want to investigate the subject of paleography. Simply deciphering the old handwriting is another task that will need to be done before you can even begin to translate. Good luck!
