How to locate ancestors that were born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire
My grandparents were both born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It later became Yugoslavia and is now Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. For some reason I can't find birth and death information for my grandparents even though I actually saw my grandfather's grave. My grandfather Antun Belavic was born in Sisak around 1895 and my grandmother Andjelka Belavic (nee Orlovac) was born in Banja Luka around 1898.

Where is your grandfather's grave located--i.e., what town? And what was his death date? Do you know where and when your grandparents were married, and do you have any records you can link to (or upload) that might help? And do you know their parents' names? (By the way, the listings in the FamilySearch Catalog for the two locations are spelled Banja Loka and Sisek.)

Hello - Unfortunately, I don’t have this information. I was 6 years old when I visited my grandfather’s grave. It was a simple wooden cross. My grandparents both died before I was born, and my parents are deceased as well.

The Banja Loka Roman Catholic church records are available at https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/405897?availability=Family%20History%20Library and the Sisek Roman Catholic church records are available at https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/457470?availability=Family%20History%20Library and https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/626580?availability=Family%20History%20Library
I looked through the 1895 Sisek births and did not find an Antun Belavic; it would help if we can establish your grandparents' exact dates of birth. Were your grandparents married in the USA, or back in the old country? The marriage record might list their dates of birth. And did they immigrate to the USA, or was it your father/mother who immigrated? If your grandfather immigrated, I suggest looking for his petition for U.S. naturalization.

Thanks for the references! 🙂 I will check them out. My grandparents were married and died in Yugoslavia. My mother immigrated to the US. It’s a challenge finding records. Not sure if two world wars might have something to do with it.
