Multiple entries for Lienheim, Germany

Hello,

 

There are multiple entries for the town named Lienheim near the Swiss border, but I do not understand the differences between those that are dated "Unknown–1945". How do I choose the proper one?

I'm not on the places team and I only have a tiny handful of my relatives who strayed into Germany but I did try to understand what place-names might be applicable to them.

 

I have this idea that the places team tries to use the Meyers Gazetteers but I have only found access to one of those. If that one doesn't help, I attempt to use "The Genealogical Gazetteer (GOV)" on http://gov.genealogy.net/search/index

 

You may, or may not, find it useful and it may, or may not, bear some resemblance to the FS Place-names. Lienheim (the village) is represented on this page:

Its place-name hierarchy seems a little complex to say the least. Landkreis Waldshut appears in two places in that diagram - no idea why but presumably there is a reason for it. Anyway - that's what a group of German genealogists think the situation is / was. Whether it helps you choose between the FS entries, I've no idea...

I have the same questions for other locations.

In the absence of an "official" response, I would point out that the several entries for Lienheim all have the same Lat, Lon coordinates. So, in one sense, it doesn't matter since they are different names for the same spot on earth.

 

I like to label my genealogical events with the place name that made sense when the event took place. FS places do that sometimes. I can imagine how huge a task that would be to get right.

 

I'd like to hear what the FSFT places teams' goals are for historically accurate place names. That would help me use the system as it currently exists.

@Adrian Bruce1​ Thanks for the link, that's a very interesting project albeit very ambitious! For Lienheim it is indeed a complex graph! I'll need to take a closer look at this graph and compare it to the different places available on FT.
