Danish Translation Request for Niels Pedersen in Vollerslev

In searching for my 3rd great grandfather, Niels Pedersen GZ3Y-GT8, I found his birth and christening record. I have two questions. First, his name is clearly stated as Niels Pedersen, his fathers name is listed as Poul Martin Pedersen. Is it common that he did not take his patronymic name and become Poulsen? This is my first Danish record to see.
