Change in Canada historical place
Hello FamilySearch place group,
Since some week I notice that the Amérique coloniale britannique as been change by Amérique du Nord britannique on FamilySearch places in Quebec.
It's a good thing, but the problem is that every place in Quebec in that time is not standardise anymore.
The period concerned is:
1764-1791
1792-1841
1841-1867
Is it possible to change every place that have been enter as Amérique coloniale britannique
to Amérique du Nord britannique so that every place will be standardise ?

Amérique du Nord britannique does show as Alternate Name for Canada for these time periods.
When a patron is using a place for a life event, changes to the data don't un-standardize that life event. We can't make system-wide changes to update the name because we allow patrons to choose different display text already. We don't want to overwrite their chosen display text if they don't want the standardized display name.
Everything is working the same way as before in terms of connecting your family tree to records, etc. We're sorry for the trouble with the display text.
(If you would like to change the display text of a life event in the future, you can use the text box to search for the standardized place, click on a standard to choose it, and then enter your preferred text in the text box. Some people choose to add addresses, etc. this way.)0 -
I searched around for an example and double checked. All those place names are still standardized. And are standardized no matter what language you set the website to:
As long as the notation "Standardized Data" appears or if the displayed data and the standardized version are the same so only one set of name and date appear, then the Displayed Data is properly linked to the Standardized Data and the date and place are standardized.
FamilySearch uses a double entry system for dates and places so that users can enter exactly what they determine to be the best way to present those dates and names for other researchers to have the best accuracy and clarity possible. If the Displayed Data is different from standard, for the program to function properly, the displayed version needs to linked to a standard.
This dual entry also allows all users to quickly view at least a portion of the date and place in their own language by opening the Data View window because the linked standard changes when the website language is changed:
When a standard is updated, FamilySearch does not update the Displayed Data because that displayed data is completely up to the user. In this case, if users feel the old standard is actually more correct, then they can keep the old standard. This is a very powerful feature of Family Tree.
