Ancestors who Emigrated from Sweden to Canada and Beyond
Dear Canada Research Members:
A new member to our group could use your help. See below:
Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this site. I originally came from Sweden, and have several relatives who emigrated in the late 1800's and early 1900's. We haven't found much more about their families or descendents. My interest is to find these families and how they have continued growing in their lives. One of my family lines named Stromberg, moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario. There are several others in my family branches that also ended up in Canada. I am very excited to see if I can find more information on them, so that I can let the rest of our family in Sweden know what happened to them.Hjordis Sjostedt-Smith
Hjordis: The following link in FamilySearch lists a Stromberg that was born in Sweden (1874) and died in Thunder Bay, Ontario in 1968.
Hulda Carolina Nordin (1882–1926), Felix Stromberg (1884–1968) • Landscape View • Family Tree (familysearch.org)
Maybe this is a distant ancestor. Let the group know if you have questions. There are a number of members that have a great deal of experience in family history.
Felix Stromberg (1884-1968) was the brother of my paternal grandmother Evelina Strömberg (married Sjöstedt) (1886-1960). Felix left his home in Norrgissjö, Gideå, Västernorrland county, Sweden, 2 May 1911 to emigrate to North America.Hulda Carolina Nordin (1882-1926) left 14 June 1911 with the same destination. They both came from the county of Västernorrland in Sweden. Hulda came from Banafjäl, Grundsunda.Felix married Hulda C. Nordin after they both arrived in Fort William, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada: 2 August 1913. They did not have any children. After Hulda's death in 1926, Felix married Helga Gidlöf (1896-1962), 15 January 1927 in Fort William, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. They did not have any children.Helga Gidlöf left her home in Salsjön, Edsele, Västernorrland county, Sweden, July 1923, and emigrated to Canada. Her sister Brita Kristina Gidlöf moved from home in 1903 and emigrated, and was married to Magnus Albert Andersson 7 September 1907 in Monson, Piscataquis, Maine, USA. He lived 1875-1916 and was born in Svartvik, Njurunda, Västernorrland county, Sweden. They had one child Ada (1913-1916). Magnus died 12 January 1916. Brita then married Magnus half-brother Olof Axel Andersson (1887-1968), in 1916 in the same town, and they had one daughter, Irma Katarina Anderson (1917-2001) and Brita became a widow again 19 December 1968. She died 14 February 1972 in Aurora, York, Ontario, Canada.Another sister, a twin to Helga, Hulda Gidlöf (1896-1991) emigrated in 1913, married William V. Gleason about 1917-1919 and lived in South Portland, Cumberland, Maine, USA. They had 5 children. The grave marker shows Felix Stromberg, with his 2 wives Hulda Carolina Nordin, and Helga Gidlöf.I am Evelina Strömberg Sjöstedt's granddaughter Hjördis Sjöstedt-Smith.
Hjordis:At quick glance there seems to be quite a bit of information/sources available on FamilySearch about Evelina's ancestors and siblings. And from your latest post it seems that you know a great deal as well. Is there a particular ancestor or ancestors you are researching that the group may be able to help provide additional information on?
Thanks for answering,We know very little about Felix and his wife in Canada. His wife Helga Gidlöv's family are searching for information about her too. Felix'. I am also trying to find more information on Felix' brother Nils Anton Stromberg (1877-1957). both emigrated to the Thunder Bay area. But we know very little about what Nils Anton and his wife Ida Lovisa Lundström (1878-1929). They married 25 October 1902, in Västerbotten, Sweden. The first 4 children were born in Sweden by 1909.My records show that Nils Anton emigrated in 1909. Ida and their 4 children emigrated to Canada and arrived 20 September 1912 in Fort William, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. As far as I know they had 3-4 more children after they arrived and were reunited. I only know a little about the oldest child Agda (1903-1996) with her husband Johan Albert Lagergren 1901-1967) and 2 daughters, Ellen Louisa (1923-2001), and Evelina Sophia (born 1926). I a know a little about the third child Andrea Ingeborg Strömberg (1906-1957) and her husband James LLoyd Tennant (1899-1957), and their 5 children.I'm trying to find out more about their descendents, and where they ended up, and about their lives. They also had the youngest brother, Oskar Strömberg (1896-1980), who emigrated about 22 May 1921, but after visiting his brother in Thunder Bay, he ended up in the United States.I am also looking for another man from my home village in Sweden: Erik Villehart Hörnfeldt, who married in about 1922, and had 3 children, before he left to emigrate to North Amerika about 1925 or after… His family in Sweden never heard from him again, and they would very much like to know what happened to him. They know that he used the surname "Eklund" at some time. Someone who knew him, met him at Prince Rupert's Island, at some point.Any suggestions where I should start searching for their records…_?
