Did civil registration is Switzerland start all at one time, i.e. nationally, or did cantons begin i
If it's the latter, is there a chart online somewhere that shows me when each canton started civil registration?

Sunnie,
this is great info, thanks. Might I ask where you got this information on when civil registration started in each of the cantons? I would like to learn more about this. Is there a book or article that might go further into this topic?

From an older publication of The Genealogical Society of Utah published in 1982. Researched by Jared Suess. It's from the World Conference on Records "Records of Genealogical Value For Switzerland." Series C. No.2 1982😌

I know I'm 5 years late ... but felt I still have to speak up.
1) We have to differentiate between present day's Civil Registry system: this is a national system and started in 1876 in all of Switzerland ... see https://community.familysearch.org/de/discussion/91988/council-minutes-chur-1889-transcription-translation-and-background-explanations (scroll down to the explanations). Examples of what to expect there may be found on https://www.geneal-forum.com/phpbb/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=31883.
2) Most cantons started cantonal "Citizens' Registers". The related legislation in St.Gallen is from 1834 - so the registers started usually 1835/36 - not 1867.
