Looking for my great-aunt...
Hi! I am new to this group. I am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction of finding out death records in New York? I had a great-aunt who emigrated to the USA back in 1922. I have discovered she married in 1929 a Danish man in Brooklyn, NY. I have seen the records of the 1940 and also the 1950 US Census and found out where ny Great -aunt lived. However the trail runs cold thereafter. I can't seem to find out when she died. The sad thing is when she emigrated to America she never contacted her family back home in Northern Ireland. I remember my late Granny saying that no one ever heard from her eldest sister again. I have been trying to find out about this elusive great -aunt and am thrilled to have some pieces of the jigsaw, but would love to know more about her. It appears that she and her husband didn't have any children of their own, but judging by the 1950 census they were in process of adopting a little girl. I just don't know how to go about finding out death records. I have tried Ancestry.com but again haven't been successful. Thank you in advance for any help. Very appreciated...

Hi @Rachel84389 I have roots in County Tyrone and lots of folks who settled in or passed through New York City. I would love to help!
New York City vital records are held separately from the rest of the state of New York, just to add another level of difficulty. Last year, NYC did put many vital records online, for free, but the deaths end at 1948.
And, access to more recent records is restricted to direct and close descendants. You may find this page helpful, with instructions about how to obtain later records: https://www.nyc.gov/site/records/historical-records/genealogy.page
Newspapers can be useful for finding more details. I subscribe to several newspaper sites, and I'll be happy to dig, if you want to share details. If you're not comfortable posting details in the group, feel free to send me a private message. Just click on my username and then on the box "Message."
Hope this helps!
