Cannot merge living people from different trees
There are 4 persons repeated that we can't merge. Is that only happening to me?

I got this to work, but I found the process rather confusing. It'd be nice to have a help article which: 1) provides a narrative illustrating the use case, 2) followed by a set of steps and and accompanying screenshots.
In my case, my sister and I have duplicate living people. She has her kids and grands, and I have a corresponding set of the same in my tree, too.

The process is easy. You just have to use the "Merge by ID" feature. But it is failing.

On the Family Group Trees Frequently Asked Questions page it says:

Well, it's not clear what it means. I understand is not possible to merge person X repeated in family group A and family group B, but it is possible to merge various copies of person X in family group A, even if they are copied from various personal trees. That is the case I was indicating. When you add a new person in a family group from your personal family tree, there is a lettering indicating that maybe that person should be merged.

Anyway, the message "please try again" is clearly confusing if that is just impossible.

Right, I see what you're saying, Bosch. I think.
You mean if there is one Family Group Tree, called "Bosch Family" is created, and then you add "Mom" and then your siblings also add "Mom", then those Moms can be merged? Seems like this should work.
However, if you have "Mom" as a living person in your own "Private" tree (ID: MMPP-L1T) , then you copy "Mom" into the "Bosch Family" which creates a copy of her there (ID: MMFG-L2T), and your sibling has a copy of "Mom" in their "Private" tree (ID: SMPP-L3T)... then SMPP-L3T can't be merged.
Can your sibling copy "Mom" (ID: SMPP-L3T) into "Bosch Family" tree? And then the two copies could be merged? I haven't tried that yet myself.

Yes, something like that happened. We have now 4 repeated persons in the same Family Group. And if it is not possible to merge them, then the message "The merge request has failed. Please try again" should be changed, because now is confusing.
But I have the feeling that most people here would prefer to be able to merge them, because if they want to preserve people in their private area without changes, then, they will just not add them into the Family Group.
Edit:
I imagine that then it will would need the feature "Break the link between this person in the private area and in the Family Group" and a message indicating "Are you sure you want to add those persons to the family group? Remember that then your relatives in your personal area will suffer the changes made in the family group. You will be able to break the link between the family group and the personal area later."

Yes you are able to merge individuals within a single family group. The problem here is only that I cannot replicate your merge failures. Would you be willing to send screenshots of each step so that we can figure out where this process is failing for you?
I hear that you are trying to merge various copies of individuals copied in from different members' privately created individuals. Would you do a test for me and check if you have any issues merging two people that you personally created?

I think only one screenshot is required. At the end of a merge it indicates that the merge is not possible. There is no more information about why.
I can merge without problems the copy of myself from a personal family tree and a copy of myself created into a family group. But I can not merge, in the family group a copy of myself from my personal tree and a copy of myself from my mother's family tree (both copied in the same family group).
