Bandwidth Exceeded Message
We have recently experienced a patron getting he following bandwidth exceeded message while downloading images from FamilySearch at our center. She had been using FamilySearch to search for records. She had been searching for about 2 1/2 hours and only downloaded one image thus far when this message came up.
"Your data needs have exceeded the general use license and purpose for this web application, and you are now temporarily blocked from downloading images. In one hour, your privileges' will be restored. To avoid this message in the future, you will need to reduce your data usage. If you have data needs that exceed the general use license and purpose for this web application, please contact searchfeedback@familysearch.org for more information on proper access of FamilySearch data."
"Data accessible through he FamilySearch APIs is protected by copyright. Any programmatic access, reformatting, or rerouting of this data without permission is prohibited. FamilySearch considers such unauthorized use a violation of its reproduction, derivation, and distribution rights."
We have contacted FamilySearch at the link suggested but have not heard back. Has anyone else seen this message. Has anyone experienced this message before?

Please be assured that FamilySearch is aware of the download restrictions. However, since the records are not the property of FamilySearch. Copyrights are the sole property of the provider of those records who, therefore, have control of their usage. You may wish to teach the patrons to use snip and sketch to capture information they require instead of doing a screen print or download.

Our FSC first saw this "error" message about three years ago. On the first day that we were open for that week, for the first patron, immediately after her first down-loaded image, she got the bandwidth "error" message. We called FHC tech support: they had no idea why we got the message, they had no idea of what the BW limit was, and they had no idea what we should/could do about it (!?). Furthermore, there had been no email (or other communication) from FS about the "BW limitation". Doesn't anybody in Engineering have any specific knowledge as to why these messages occur under such seemingly random circumstances???? Yes, I've read the boilerplate explanations (above), but really, someone in a position of knowledge/responsibility should get to the bottom of this.

IF Centers continue to have issues with the bandwidth exceeded error, they should follow the KA 842. For either message, please contact recordrequests@FamilySearch.org for information on proper access to FamilySearch data. We have received word from the engineers that this issue has been resolved. Thank you for all your help reporting the details of the issue, when it was encountered! This helped our engineers understand the severity of the problem.
