Why are there no records?
I have the death certificate for Leonard Alexander Alyson, who was born Leonid Alexandrovich Olshevsky. (He changed his name when he Naturalized as a US Citizen) He died 27 April 1951 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, United States. His date and place of birth are listed as 5 August 1899 Tulchyn, Vinnytsia, Ukraine. His parents are Alexander Olshevsky and Nadejda Mikhailovna Klassovsky.
I have been unable to find any record of his birth/christening at all there. Why? The only records for these families seem to be here in the US. I've contacted the Vinnytsia Archives, and have tried contacting local churches in Tulchyn, but NADA! It's like these families only came into existence in the records when they were getting off the boat on this side of the water, and it's making me want to pull my hair out.

Hi Tammy,
I did a quick search for Tulchyn, and it looks like that is the name of both the city and the surrounding district/county. I wonder if maybe this is a case where the more general area was referenced by the immigrant in their paper trail, rather than a smaller village somewhere else in the district. It could be worth expanding your search to a larger area, covering the district instead of just the city's area if you haven't already.

I've done a general search of Vinnytsia also, and there is no record of this family. As far as I can tell, the Klassovsky/Klasovsky (Классовский/Класовский) family doesn't appear in the Vinnytsia records at all on FamilySearch. It appears in Donetsk in 1916. It appears in Tomsk, Russia on a birth record in 1894 and 1905.
There are 20 results total in a records search for this surname on FS, when limited to the exact spelling, but not limited to where the search is taking place.
