How to schedule a visit to the General Archives in Karlsruhe?
I contacted a city archivist in Buchen, Baden, Germany and was provided information on my Great Grandfather, Franz Peter Schmitt
22 October 1827 – 14 July 1874
G9PZ-RKT
The archivist told me there was another record that could be found at General Archives in Karlsruhe. The record number is 345A1303.
I have written a letter to the Karlsrue Archives a month ago and followed up with an email last week. My family and I will be in Germany later this month (June-July) and I would really like a chance to see the aforementioned file.
Any suggestions wold be appreciated
Thanks,
Margie

Hi,
It seems you can preorder what you want to see but you have to register on their website in order to do that.
If you would be interested in doing that I could try to write down for you which different steps you need to go. (There will be many!)
Or I could call the archive and ask whether it would be possible for you to come, order the document, and look at the document all in one day. (I'm German and live in Germany, so calling is not a problem.)

Thank you so much.
I will follow any instructions you send
or if you think a call would work better, I would really appreciate that.

Hi,
I'll give them a call tomorrow morning [edit: the reading room and information seem to be closed on Mondays, so it will have to be Tuesday] and will then let you know what they said.

Hi Margaret,
Yesterday I talked to the information service at the Karlsruhe Generallandesarchiv. This is the info they gave me.
Regards, Christine
· You don’t have to pre-register online for your visit
· You will register (probably with your passport) when you get to the reading room.
· Once you are registered you can order your document with the record number.
· They have certain fixed times when they get documents from the storage. These times are Tuesdays to Fridays at 10 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm.
You should be there about 30 minutes (or a little longer if you want to make sure) before one of these times to get registered and to put your order in.
After these fixed times it will then take about another 15 minutes until your document will be there for you to look at.
· You are allowed to take photos of the document but you should tell the reading room personal before you take a photo. They might ask you to move to a certain part of the reading room so the picture taking doesn’t disturb other users.
· The address is Generallandesarchiv, Nördliche Hildapromenade 3, Karlsruhe
· When you enter the building they have front desk and they have lockers where you are supposed to lock in your jackets and bags. Then you go upstairs to the reading room (Lesesaal) and they will help you with the registration and ordering of your document.
· In case you have further questions regarding your research they also have their special information desk open Tuesdays to Fridays 9-12 am and 1.30-3 pm
· The woman on the phone made sure to remind me that they are closed on Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
She also mentioned that there is not need to notify the archive of your planned visit. But if you feel you want to do that you would write to glakarlsruhe@la-bw.de and let them know day and time of your visit.

Will someone there understand English?

Hi,
They said that the people who work at the reading room speak English, definitely enough to help out with the registration form and with the ordering of the document. They have English speaking visitors from the US or Australia and also speak English with visitors from Africa they said.
For more detailed and special research questions involving very specialized terminology they would even have the possibility of getting one of their special archivists to come to the reading room.
Regards, Christine
