Hi. I am looking at a marriage record written in German in an Evangelical church book in 1857. The marriage took place in what is now Kosice, Kosice, Slovakia. In this record, third from the top of the page, he is listed as Samuel Wilhelm Baszkolderie. The marriage is also recorded in a Catholic church book (his wife was Catholic) where his name was listed as Samuel Baszgoldrich.
I have no experience with the German language. Could someone give me hand.

Several things come to mind here. First, look for birth records of children born after this marriage date. What spelling was used for the father in those? Second, this record says that Samuel is from Bielitz, so look for his birth record in that place - or any other records that might confirm the family name. Third, linguistically, a k and a g can sound alike, so that difference in the surname can easily be chalked up to pronunciation. If we stretch our imagination a bit and say that the last letter of the surname is a c instead of an e, then again, it's a small pronunciation step to that ch in the Catholic surname.

Thanks for your response.
I have records for children that came afterward. They were recorded in Catholic Church books. None of them used the Baszkolderie name - they were always closer to Baszgoldrich.
Samuel's Catholic records also say he came from Bielitz.
I was wondering if the Evangelical marriage record gives me info that I don't already have but as I say I don't speak any German.
I have reached out to the Evangelical church in what is now Bielsko-Biala, Poland asking them to look for a birth record. They said they would but I won't get my hopes up.

Are you familiar with the website for the Polish State Archives - https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en
This is a portal for all the archives in Poland, so you can search for Bielsko-Biala records there. Or any other place you're searching for. You can restrict your search to records with digitized images only, but then you may miss records that might be helpful even if they're not digitally available yet.
