Military records from mid 1800s
You’ve all been so helpful. I am now trying to get my GGGF’s military records. This is the information I have so far. His name was Antonio Breda. He was born in 1830 in Conegliano. He went on to be a Captain and later an Architect. I understand that to find the military records, I would have to contact the military district in the province he was from. I coudn’t find anything concrete as to the province for Conegliano so I tried Padua. I sent a letter in Italian to one of the emails at the bottom of this page. They responded that I needed to contact the State Archives (Ministry of Culture), for which also is broken up by military districts.
- Have I correctly assumed that Conegliano was within the Padua Military District?
- I understand that some records were also kept at the local court (Procura della Republica). But again, I would need to know the Military district.
I feel like I am chasing my tail. Does anyone have great sources for military records or suggestions on how to proceed?
Many thanks,
Kimberly

Hmm, if I understand this correctly, it would be Treviso. Not sure which dates you need, because the subject doesn't match the description. Anyway, you might be able to find what you need here during Italian business hours:

Sorry, that should’ve said 1830.

This might be it or someone related:
There are other Breda on that site as well.

I appreciate your assistance, unfortunately all the Bredas I saw were too young as my relative was born in the 1830s. I was hoping because he had a long history in the military there would be records from later in his career. I haven’t found any yet. That site did give me some additional links to search records in the Venetian area, so thanks for that!
