Help with translation for Rottchers/Schapers burial record
Trying to separate two Moritz Rottchers/Schapers families. Here's my best transcription:
1782
December
Vehlage
Num 46
51 Den Alter _____ und Kirchen Provisor [Church Apothecary?] Johann Moritz Röttcher [dodo? - formerly] Schäfer gestorben den 25th, begraben den 27th, alt 62 Jahr Frist [period of time] 32 Jahrs Provisor _______ und het 18 kinder in ___________ _______ mit Anna Margrete Schäpers ge????
_______
If my transcription is correct - that he was a "Church Apothecary", what did that person do? I tried Googling and didn't come up with anything very satisfactory.
This is so interesting to see how families were just changing what their surname was . . .
Thanks so much for your help and experience! Jenny

My edits/additions in bold:
51 Der Altermann und Kirchen Provisor Johann Moritz Röttcher modo Schäfer gestorben den 25ten, begraben den 27ten, alt 62 Jahr. Er ist 32 Jahrs Provisor gewesen und hat 18 kinder in seiner Ehe mit Anna Margrete Schäpers gezeuget
Comment: Altermann = church elder and Kirchenprovisor = church treasurer were honorary functions in the church community.
Translation:
The church elder and treasurer Johann Moritz Röttcher modo ("called") Schäfer died the 25th, buried the 27th, aged 62 years. He has been 32 years church treasurer and has fathered 18 children in his marriage with Anna Margrete Schäpers.

If I understand it correctly, the modo term means that he is now called Schäfer. I'm wondering if the wife's last name is Schäfer rather than Schäper? Is this a case of the husband taking on the wife's family name because of the farm ownership?

I agree with @JohnsonGreg. Vehlage is in Westphalia where the use of farm names was widespread. So the wife's name is Anna Margrete Schäfer; the ending -s just being a female sign.

I can't thank you both enough! Looking at the original record, it looks like both Moritz and Ann Margrete's last name is the same "Schäfer" or in her case, "Schäfers".
So, are you saying that Ann Margrete owned the farm and that Moritz took on her name so that he would then be in the ownership line? I haven't run into farm "names" before. If that is the case, would I look for Moritz's baptismal record under Roettger/Roettcher?
I'm learning and really appreciate you help!

Here's an article with more information about farm names that will explain it better than I can.

Yes, look for Moritz's baptismal record under Roettger/Roettcher.

Amazing! Great article with so much help in explaining the terms and circumstances of name changes. In fact just this afternoon I was trying to decipher a word in two burials that appeared to be the same: Leibzuchter. I had tried putting it in a translator as Liebzuchter and got no where. Now I know why and what it means!
Thank you so much -- there is so much to learn!
