Validation of surname
Hello there.
This is my first ever posted, so please accept my apologies if I have posted in the wrong manner etc. I have been directed to this group by another Family Search member.
I am researching an ancestor of mine who came to Australia from Germany around 1880-1885. Unfortunately there is not a wealth of information on him, and some local records have his name spelt in a variety of ways.
I was searching for one Gustav(f) Carl(Charles) Julius Maskow. Born in Stettin Prussia (Germany) ~1858.
I have pieces of his history whilst in Australia and New Zealand, but have no records of his DOB, Parents(s) names etc. Unfortunately, he had a rather checkered and short life.
Whilst researching Family Search I came across the following person:
Gustav Carl Julius Marlow
Born 11 Aug 1860 in Stettin.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6Z67-5FW1
As his surname had a few different spellings on the Australian records which I have located, and considering that the details are a close match, I was wondering if possibly the surname has been incorrectly transcribed from the source document. "Deutschland, Preußen, Pommern, Katholische und Lutherisch Kirchenbücher, 1544-1966".
Could anyone please advise how, if possible, I could have the transcription validated?
Thanks again for your kind assistance and advices.
regards
David

Here is a link to the original record from the birth register from the Saint Peter and Paul church parish in Stettin -
Gustav Carl Julius is the second-to-last entry on the page - No. 245. Even if you can't read the old German handwriting, it's very plain to see that the mother's last name is listed as Marlow. There is no father because Gustav was illegitimate.

Many thanks for your reply and the information.
Unfortunately the link does not work for me here as it gives a 404 error, so I'm unable to view.
I guess I'll have to put it down to either a coincidence, or for some reason when my Gustaf Carl Julius Maskow born circa 1858 in Stettin came to Australia, he may have changed his surname slightly. A bit of a puzzle, and I wish I had more information on my ggGrandfather.
Kind regards
David

The link only works for me at a Family History Center, so I can do a screen capture next time I'm there, if you'd like.

Hi there @sylviaelchinger1. I'm not very mobile at the moment due to illness, so if you were able to grab a screenshot or such then that they prove insightful. Thanks for the offer.
I know I shouldn't be surprised by this, but it's just such a strange coincidence for me. Christian names, birth location and year all the same, and the surname only slightly different. Marlow v. Maskow.
If I could only locate immigration records etc then that may illuminate things. Alas, no luck in Australia yet.
Kind regards.
David
