Place Names Best Practices in German Research
At least two of my ancestral families are German. They lived there long enough that, while the city names didn't change, the region/state/province place names changed often. I am wondering if
1) It is best practice to list the larger locales by the place name used during the time period it would have been in each record
and
2) Is there a good/great resource for tracking place name changes over time for Germany (including Alsace-Lorraine)?
Thank you in advance.

Wikitree has published a guideline how place names should be entered: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Germany_Project_Location_Field_Guidelines
Don't know if it helps - German history is quite complex 😅.

Another good resource that will show you the administrative jurisdictions that a place had over time, http://gov.genealogy.net/search/index

@Ulrich Neitzel and @Cheryl Viering
This is fantastic and just what I was looking for. After doing genealogy since 1984, I've finally figured out that I'm not going to be able to get the depth I'm looking for if I ignore the geography and history of each family member.
Thank you again!!
