A few words in Death Record
Hello = I would really appreciate help with a couple of words in this death record for Jacob Desch, 1842, Burgjoss, Hesse. The first record on the page.
I just can't figure out the first two words in the second column (I can read the r.k. for Roman Catholic) - I've noticed that for many entries this includes information about their family but I can't see that here
Also in the fourth column - I can't read either word. I know his wife died in 1801 but these words don't look like Wittwer.
Thank you

Hello Liz,
Second column: Bauernguts-Auszügler = farm estate life pensioner/retiree
Fourth column: verheurathet = verheuratet = married.
Note in both instances each word is hyphenated and split over two lines.

Thank you Robert. I didn't notice the hyphens. I could read Auszügler and now can see the other words. I guess he must have remarried, which makes sense since his children were very young when their mother died.
What is the symbol that looks like a 7 over/before the S in Auszügler? I've seen that in other records from this scribe.

You're welcome, Liz.
That mark over the first "u" in "Auszügler" is a bogen = a simple curved mark a scribe places over a handwritten letter "u" to help distinguish the "u" from a handwritten "e".
Note in the word "Bauernguts" the bogen appears over the two u's in that word as well, even though they don't necessarily look the bogen in "Auszügler" -- they're all the same mark.
The bogen is usually made "in a hurry" by the scribe and often takes slightly different shapes, though it should be distinctive from the umlaut over the "u" which is two dots: ü.

Thanks Robert - some of this scribe's bogens look like 7s! I thought maybe there was some other symbol that I didn't know about....
