Possible help on my Great Grandfather
Hello,
My Great Grandfather was Johann Liesch born approximately Aug of 1849-1851. He was married in Germany before he left to come to America. He landed in New York and that very same day married a gal named Anna Maria Hecker who was 22 years old. The marriage took place on 19 Jan 1888. There are 2 children with them. Ages 3 and 6 months. I am wondering if their mom died before he left Germany and brought with a gal. He was born in Brecht, Bitburg-Prum, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. The marriage record says his father's name was Thomas Liesch and mother was Susanna Baetzen. The oldest child's birth date was recorded at her death as Mary Liesch1884–1976
BIRTH 28 DEC 1884 • Geichlingen, Bitburg-Prumer Landkreis, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany
Her sister Anna has a birthdate of 4 Jun 1886.
However on the ship manifest the children are ages 3 and 6 months. So perhaps their birthdates were not recorded correctly . They settled in St. Augusta, Minnesota.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What exactly is your question?

I would love to know the name of his first wife. When she died and where the 2 children may have been born.

It looks like you have two place names: Brecht and Geichlingen. I would probably start with searching the records for Geichlingen. Since Johann was born in Brecht and the child was born in Geichlingen, perhaps the child's mother was originally from Geichlingen.
The FamilySearch catalog shows a Familienbuch (family lineage book) for Geichlingen (catalog states Geichingen as title) covering 1779-1899. This would be a quick way to see if the family was there. Call number is 943 B4do ser. B v.273. If you are not near the FamilySearch library, you could submit a Lookup request https://www.familysearch.org/en/library/record-lookup-service
Catholic parish records for Geichlingen are held at the Diocese archive (Bistumsarchiv) in Trier Germany. They have baptism/marriage/death records for the timeframe 1799-1878. See image 111 in the holdings list https://www.bistumsarchiv-trier.de/fileadmin/document/KIBUVerzeichnisHomepageAugust2018.pdf
Civil registration in Rhineland started in 1792, so you may need to contact the appropriate civil registry office (for Geichlingen, this is Neuerburg https://www.neuerburg-eifel.de/index.php/buergerinfo/standesamt) to inquire about birth/marriage and death records.
For Brecht, the catholic parish is Wissmannsdorf (or Wißmannsdorf). FamilySearch has some records for your timeframe of interest: https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/302305?availability=Family%20History%20Library
You can see the archive holdings for Wißmannsdorf on image 448 of the PDF. And the associated civil registry office is Bitburg.

Yes thank you for the information. I am not near a family search library and there are very few options in my area at all. I will try to submit a search request. Peg

I did find a good reason to believe that Johann was born on 29 Aug 1851. Peg
