What's the right way to refer to French-occupied Pfalz?
I have some ancestors who were born, married or died in the Bergzabern area in the Pfalz during the time when it was occupied by France and administered as part of the French Departement du Bas-Rhin during 1790s until 1815. What would be the appropriate way to cite that location for their records, both in English and in German? Any ideas?

I would do it in German like as written in the records.

Thanks @Lilly_Moon. Unfortunately I haven't found any civil records from that period -- just church records, and they don't mention the administrative location. I did find a reference in wikipedia that refers to it has Französische Besatzungszone under the Frankreich for 1793-1798, and for 1798-1814 as the Département du Bas Rhin, Frankreich, so I guess I will use those.

The Historic Gazetteer is usually the best source for Germanic locations. It lists all of the administrative locations, and when they were. http://gov.genealogy.net/search/name

@Cheryl Viering, Thanks for that tip -- I hadn't come across that site yet.
