England, Cumbria Parish Registers, 1538-1990 is a real pain..... Cumbria did not exist until 1974
..... it was previously Cumberland. So the vast majority of records should be shown with a standarized name of 'Cumberland' and not 'Cumbria'. This will mean that anyone attaching these records will probably need to change the standardize names everytime they attach a record. I'm in the process of doing hundreds of them!

To be honest, I don't think the "Cumbria" issue is anything to do with the standard names, and everything to do with some appalling indexing. Maybe.
Firstly, based on very limited searching on my part, places in Cumberland do appear in Standard Names with dated entries containing Cumberland and Cumbria at the correct times. (But I'm not claiming that they're all like that!)
Secondly, I'm currently searching for Smith entries in "England, Cumbria Parish Registers, 1538-1990" - the vast majority appear to have an Event Place of "Cumbria, England, United Kingdom" - including entries in the 1600s. No town or parish. Where the Event Place is a proper name like "Penrith, Cumberland, England, United Kingdom" (for 1882), the index entry contains Cumberland, as it should do.
Now we do know that the full place-names are assigned after indexing has been completed from the "meta data" for the project. I suspect that
(1) "Cumbria, England, United Kingdom" is the default place-name
(2) loads of entries have ended up with no indexed place name, while some have a correct place-name like "Penrith",
(3) "Penrith" entries - when combined with their date? - end up with the correct "Penrith, Cumberland, England, United Kingdom", but ...
(4) the entries with no indexed place name have ended up with the default "Cumbria, England, United Kingdom".
My best guess (I'm just an ordinary non-LDS user) would be that you should raise a call with FS Support saying (if you agree with me!) that the collection "England, Cumbria Parish Registers, 1538-1990" contains vast numbers of entries with no specific event place (i.e. no town or parish), that it should contain them and can they please arrange for the missing data to be added? (some hope! Cynical grin)

This collection is unhelpful as it does not appear to contain any 'parish' place names - Cumbria is not a parish

So, are we likely to get an explanation from FamilySearch? Note that I am asking for an explanation, not the fix because that might take longer.
