German Translation Help, Please!
My great great great grandfather is Johannes Martin, born 4 November 1788 in Rorshain, Germany. I believe this is his birth or baptismal record. His father was Johannes Martin and mother Elisabetha Joxin of Wiera. Beyond that there is little I understand from this record. I am most appreciative of the help I continue to receive in this discussion group and am most grateful if anyone can help once again. thank you kindly... Susan

(4.) On the 9th of November Joh. Henrich, little son of the shepherd Johannes Martin and his wife Elisabetha Joxin from Wiera [was baptized]; [the child] was born on the 4th of November in the morning at 4:00 am. The baptismal sponsor/godfather is the father's brother Joh. Henr. Martin.
My comments: The "in" suffix on the mother's maiden name "Joxin" is added to German female surnames but the "in" is not part of the surname and can be dropped, making the mother's name: Elisabetha Jox.
The abbreviated forename "Joh." could stand for "Johann" or "Johannes".

Robert once again I thank you! I wondered about 'Joh.' and what that meant. Every son born to this couple have the Joh in front of the given name and I was so confused! As for Joxin.. again its a relief to know that can be dropped as it has no significance to the spelling of the name... There is wonderful information in this record too...including the name of the brother of the father Johannes.. wow this is great and I thank you. So much appreciate your fine work. Susan
Also do you know how I can contact someone volunteering at the Family History Library in SLC to check a book on emigrants from Hessen? I have the name of the book etc.. just can't find out where to write for help with that.

FYI: Many German families named all their sons "Johann" with distinctive middle names. Each child with first name Johann typically would be known by the middle name in everyday life. Similarly many German daughters in a family would be named "Maria" or "Anna" with distinctive middle names. In cases such as this, it's important to identify the children by both names, e.g., Johann Michael or Maria Elisabetha.
