Historic Time Line - Frederick Edward GRAY (9WYJ-Q2T)
Greetings from Llangyfelach, Swansea, Wales,
On 05 June 2022 I received by external eMail an invitation from FamilySearch to inspect the 'Time Line' of my Great Grandfather: Frederick Edward GRAY (9WYJ-Q2T), my inspection highlighted three 'Hints' each relating to the year 1879, which I duly opened.
To me they looked very similar, dare I suggest they are identical?
However, I could not see anything thereon which I did not already know. It would be helpful if someone more knowledgeable than myself could explain what, if anything, I am missing and if appropriate what needs to be done to resolve the apparent discrepancy.

Hi John,
Thank you for your enquiry. I have checked each of the hints and as you say they are identical, except for one tiny detail which will not have any affect on on your records as each record is for the same event.
Do you have a subscription to 'Find My Past'? I was able to get a transcription of each record and the only difference is the 'Archive Reference' entry. Everything else is exactly the same. To view the transcripts in Find My Past click on one of the hints and when the 'Record Hints' box appears scroll down and you will find the link to Find My Past. On an aside if you click on England, Somerset, Church Records, 1501-1999 at the bottom of the box it will take you to that search page. Or click on the blue link provided.
You could just add one hint source and leave the rest. It is entirely up to you, however if you add all the source hints it could well reduce the chance of those hints being linked to the wrong person.
I'm guessing that the duplicate archive referencing is possibly due to the fact that records are often indexed more than once by different family history organisations. I will check up on that for you.
Best regards and happy ancestor hunting.

Good morning, Cedar and thank you for your reply
Quote: “Do you have a subscription to 'Find My Past'?”
On this occasion you and I are working from difference intermediate sources of information, I use Ancestry as my primary source of family history information and it may well be some time before I can get to the local Public Library where I conduct research involving “Find my past”.
I have looked again at the “Hints” provided by FamilySearch (FS) and would comment that this is, to the best of my memory, the first time I have found it necessary to study the documents at the far end of the provided links and as such I was left “non-plussed” at the amount of information therein, with no clear guidance as to what is amiss.
The x3 hints on Frederick E. GRAY (9WYJ-Q2T) ‘time line’ appear to connect him to a Frederick GRAY with no DoB, no DoD nor a FS 4-3 ID shown, so until such time as I can find some credible information about this currently unknown to me Frederick GRAY, I am at a loss to understand what the problem is.
However, I have temporarily ‘parked’ further research on Charles Gray (DoB ????), (DoD ????), (FSID ????-???); as I have been prompted to look more closely at an earlier generation of the wider Gray family, whom I might need some help with sorting out in due course. Albeit to say, it might be a while yet, before I have checked and more importantly double checked my facts.
In the meanwhile, may I thank you for your response to my initial request for help.
Stay safe,

Hi John,
You mentioned going to your local library, there is a FamilySearch family history library in Swansea where you will be most welcome and the staff will be happy to help you.
The link above is the general link for all FS family history libraries world wide.
If you click on the link then search for Swansea you will get a map showing you where in Swansea it is.
The Swansea Wales Family History Center
Cockett Road
SWANSEA SA2 0FN
- Hours
- T 9.30am-12.30pm; W 9.30am-1.00pm
The family history centres also have subscriptions to most of the main genealogy groups, plus (and I'm hoping this is true) you might be able to use the 1921 census. If they don't I did read that the National Library in Aberystwyth has free access to the 1921 census. Unfortunately you will have to go there in person (yes I know the roads are not the best, but hey the scenery is wonderful and think of the fish and chip lunch you could have). You will need to book and appointment.
Is this the Charles Gray you are talking about? 9WYJ-QPR
If you need any more help to sort out the tangle please contact me and I will be happy to help as I like sorting out tangles.
All the best from a small, very small village in Mid Wales.

Hello Cedar,
I've spent a lot more time looking at the three links in the 'Time Line' of Frederick Edward Gray (9WYJ-Q2T), whatever is causing the generation of the three Source Linkers has something to do with the mysterious Frederick GRAY and 1879.
The problem is resolved (I think, I hope!) it is the classic "Transcription Error", not by FS staff, not by FMP staff, the culprit 'might' and that's a big Might be, the church employee who wrote the Record of Baptism and it may not even have been him, if he was not told the second given name of the father of the child being baptised, whose full name was Frederick Edward Gray, as correctly seen by the FS Robot.
So where do we go from here, I feel disinclined to change anything the various contributors have posted, 'we' have all done what is required of us, however I can see the FS Robot periodically churning out reminders sourced from the Time Line, along with similar hints I'm currently being sent by the FS Robot at regular intervals for other individuals who I doubt would ever have been on any of our Christmas Card lists..
I shall leave it to those who have the appropriate knowledge to sort out what needs to be done next.
Thank you, Cedar for your interest in and responses to my original enquiry.
Regards, JohnG_Swansea.

I wonder if this will be of any help to you? This is for Somerset.
To find it yourself, on the home page click on 'search' and then at the bottom of the drop down list click on 'Research Wiki' just type what you want in the blank box/oblong, and press enter. Research Wiki is a wonderful place to find information.
Best regards
