Hello Kent,
Translation:
[Heading at top of page]: In the year of Christ 1798 died here in Graben.
[Left margin]: [Died] on the 31st of August [1798], in the evening between 7 and 8 o'clock. Buried on the 2nd of September [1798].
After the death of the blessed Mr. Pastor Ritter here, the following was registered by order of the "Specialats" by Pastor Heß of Hochstetten.
Mr. Johan Jacob Ritter, pastor here, age 72 years, 4 days.
Here is a transcription of the main part of the record:
Nach dem Absterben des seelig Herrn Pfarrers Ritters alhier, wurde auf befehl des Specialats, nachfolgendes von Pfarrer Heß von Hochstetten eingetragen.
Herr Johan Jacob Ritter, Pfarrer dahier, alt 72. Jahr, 4 Tag.
My comment: Hochstetten is approximately 3 miles southwest of Graben: https://www.meyersgaz.org/place/10807028

The entry indicates that "the pastor was from here." And by order of the (can't read the word) the entry was written in by Pastor Hess.

@Kent Gardiner , @Robert Seal_1
The Specialat was an ecclesiastical administrative unit of the Protestant Church in Baden at the end of the 18th and in the 19th century. The division broadly followed the division of the administrative districts of the state. At the head of a Specialat was usually a superintendent.
translated from German Wikipedia: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezialat
Note that Pastor Bürcklin had the title "Special und Kirchenrath"; he was apparently the head of the Specialat.

@Kent Gardiner We love this site as well, just wish it were a bit easier to use, where information could be uploaded more accurately and quickly. When working to help each of you, we need an extra monitor for the document, then a word document to transcribe in and access to online gazetteers, dictionaries, and any other resource accessible through the FamilySearch Germany Genealogy Research Wiki page. We just wish we had a real-time response to see if someone else is working on the same entry. Next week we have an upgrade coming to the communities.
@Ulrich Neitzel Thank you for providing the Arbeitsverein Information. That's super helpful.
@Robert Seal_1 Thank you for the extra information.

D: 31sten August:
Abends Zwischen

d. 2ten Septbr: be-

(Where are my superscripts!? I pasted them in, and now they are GONE!) You should get the idea, even without them.
The date below is for the next entry.
I was experimenting to see how this would come out. Now I know.
Here's the rest of the entry:
Nach dem Absterben des [? this is an abbreviation I can't completely read]: Herrn Pfarrers Ritters
alhier, wurde auf Befehl des Spe---lets, nach
Folgendes von Pfar: Hess von [?]
—statten eingetragen
Herr Johan Jacob
Pfarrer dahier
Alt 72 Jahr, 4. Tag
With this word, I want to say the first letter is a Z, because it looks similar to the Z in Zwischen in the (Randmarkierung) column on the left. [Zochstetten?] It doesn't make sense. I don't think its an H, because it doesn't look like the H in Herrn.

Bless you Robert. Pastor Ritter was amazing. He served for over 40 years in Graben. That is a record.
Any idea what "the following was registered by order of the "Specialats"" means? What was registered? Does that mean Pastor Hess wrote this entry?

Hi Kent,
The word "Specialat" is new to me and I haven't been able to find a translation of it in any of the usual places. Google Translate and Deepl are unable to translate.
But the following link shows that the word existed at some point in time and in the areas of Durlach and Karlsruhe close to Graben and Hochstetten: https://www.deutsche-digitale-bibliothek.de/item/U4GQH2P4EDNXBOTDWZGTKNRI6K4I53QM
The title "Combinierung des Specialats Durlach mit dem Specialat in Karlsruhe" translates as: Combination of the Specialat Durlach with the Specialat in Karlsruhe. This archival record, which might have given insight into what a "Specialat" is, unfortunately is not available online.

Thank you both for working on the word "Specialat." I'm sure having the head of the church "register" or write the written record of your funeral was a great honor. I am also impressed with the work done by pastor Ritter over a long period of time.

You're welcome, @Kent Gardiner.
Thank you, @Ulrich Neitzel, for the German Wikipedia link to the article about "Spezialat".
Hello @Annette Unrau Adams: Yes, no superscripts and no underlining available when leaving a comment in the community. Very frustrating indeed. Also, the paragraph toggle doesn't work and the default in the system is double-spaced lines (which cannot be turned off) as opposed to single-spaced lines. (The only reason the preceding comment is single-spaced here is that I typed through the end of the line.) There are instances when translating a record where you want single-spacing between short lines of text, which is not possible.
For example:
Number 2034.
Hamburg, on the 24th of October 1903.
I would like these two lines to be single-spaced in my translation, which I am unable to do.

I have noticed the same frustration with spacing on Community. Don't get me wrong, i love this site and have been truly blessed by it.

Annette. The Community has changed my life. I tried BYU FH library and SLC FH library. They were OK. But now I get the best translations and thoughtful notes daily from amazing people with great knowledge. I never dreamed this was possible. My FH work is going to a whole new level thanks to generous, wonderful people. God bless all of you.

@Kent Gardiner LOL, I am at the FHL, and I am okay?!
I get it. The Community is where people can upload a query, transcription, or translation need at any time, and then anyone can assist with extractions, transcriptions, and translations. Even suggestions on where to find more information can be provided. I am glad to read that you are having a positive experience and getting the assistance you need.
